Have a project that will require the use of rawhide.was thinking of using one of those dog chew toys as the source for the rawhide, but hate the bleached white look. Can anyone tell me how to give it a aged look,or can this bee done.Or should I just order some with a aged look already?

Thanks for any help,
Bruce

I use a strong tea solution to soak the rawhide for an aged look.ie 4 gallon sized tea bags per half gal of water. Use it at room temp, not hot. You can also use Tandy leather stains, not dye, after the soak but while still wet. This gives darker color but is kind of messy to work with. Before you use the stain, dry the excess water from the rawhide with rags.
I tried the chew bone for a source of rawhide and found it not worth the mess. They are made of unscraped hide and it like handling "snot"
I purchased a rawhide bend from Tandy for less than $20. Much better.

Thanks guys,Ray and Mark,I believe I will keep it a little less aged than that:eek: need bigger pieces than the dog would give me:D :D

Erik,is that why when you stretch the chew bone rawhide it doesnt shrink up as much as I thought it would,or didnt I soak it enough so as to get it wet all the way through?

Hit it with a heatgun Bruce. It'll shrink :)

Be careful though, it goes from not enough shrinkage , to too much in a heartbeat.

If you REALLY want aged , catch the dog after he swallows it :D
once it's dumped it will have a nice brown tint to it :D just get it before it gets rained on:D

check and see what Chuck B does with it , I'm sure he has an old way of doing it..:)
