Rawhide sheath

Here is another rawhide sheath for a larger bowie knife. Building on the techniques that Mr. Cohea posted I was able to come up with this. I think this one may be my favorite so far. I decided to not add the copper tacks and keep this one simpler. I realize that leaves the potential for the blade cutting through the welt but I doubt this one will see much carry time.

The concho is abalone and the fringe is twisted deerskin. Two small aged tin cones with horsehair and a few beads.

Thanks for looking.

Absolutely beautiful example of the type..........and now a kind word from experience. NEVER ever build a fixed blade sheath without a welt, is rule number one. Rule number two is review rule number one. Carry or not, protect your labor and creative effort with a welt.

Once again I am very impressed with your sheath!!!

Paul

Edited to add: I'm embarrased as I read the post a second time. It does have a welt, so with or without the tacks you are good to go. Although the first part of my post is true it doesn't apply to you in this case. sorry.

Paul,

I think it has a welt, he was saying he didn't add tack(s) and without them it may cut through the welt. I personally am not a fan of copper tacks so I'm good with it!

First thank you both for the very kind words. I really enjoy this type of sheath but it is pretty time consuming, at least for me.

This one does have a welt. I learned a long time ago, when I was a kid, that without a welt sheaths just don't work. I just omitted the copper tacks. I really like copper a lot and I like the tacks on this type of sheath. For this one though, I thought simpler was better.

Hopefully in the next couple of months I'll get to make a few more of this type of sheath. I'll post them up in here when I get them done.

Thank you again for the compliments.

Looks very nice. Clean and simple, I like them like that even though I do go overboard on occasion :)

The compliments would be appreciated from anyone. From this group I am very much humbled.

Hushnel, figuring out when to stop adding stuff is the hard part sometimes. I run the sheaths by my wife and she is pretty good at telling me when to stop.

Thank you all sincerely.
