Ray Cover canoe - I have been looking for one these for awhile now and this one found it's way to my door. Satin finish ATS-34, about 3 5/8 inches, stainless bolsters engraved by Bruce Shaw. I believe Ray made two sizes of canoes with this being the smaller one. I'm not sure what the wood is. Paper work said spalted wild Hyododenden but a google search for that turned up nothing. Could they have meant Rhododendron? Is Rhododendron used for handles?

Rob, that is most excellent! The engraving really works well on that canoe.

I can't help with the type of wood question, but whatever it is, it is nice. Does it have a dark greenish cast to it?

There is a lot going on with the wood but it is subdued. Wish I could take a better picture. Kind of reminds me marble due to the "spaltedness" of it. There is definitely a dark green cast in places.

Beauty, Rob! Enjoy it!

I just got word via one of my RPBM co-executives that a double bladed Cover trapper should be heading my way very soon. (Well, as soon as Ray receives the jerky that is. :p)

Be sure and post some pictures. Two-blade Covers don't show up here very often. It is amazing what treasures can be found when the pump is primed with a little jerky.

I'll be sure to do so, Rob. Can't wait to see it.

Nice Score Rob, glad you got one. I was talking with Ray a couple of weeks ago and he mentioned that he has had a few recent requests for canoes again, but had initially turned them down. Now, Ray says he might make a few next year, so I asked him to cut me out a couple extra while he was at it:D We'll see, because Ray really is reducing his production after the first of the year.

Now, on the subject of Ray's two blades...I honestly believe they are the most desirable of Ray's slipjoint lineup and as such I hardly ever turn loose of one. If I had to sell all of my Ray Cover knives but one I'd keep my large folding hunter.

Very Nice, just wish I had seen it first in my collection, I have one with Abalone scales, but yours is VERY NICE. Betzner on the forum has some of Ray's knives. He will be glad to send you some pictures of some more he may in near future put up for sale.

Thanks gentlemen. While surfing around for Ray's knives I stumbled across a picture of a sodbuster looking one. First time I had ever seen such a thing. I posted a picture in the Knives Want to Buy forum. I figure my chances are slim to none on finding one.

The chances are better than you think:D

Dayum, Rob. . . .you're on a roll. That's one of the nicest Cover's I never did see. :D

Mine looks a lot like yours, the bolsters and general shape. Would it be called a canoe or did it have a name?

I do not know a lot about Ray's knives, other than I like them.

Any additional information would be appreciated.

James, I believe Ray calls this model a canoe. I know what you mean though. The the most common look of canoes that one sees, the bolsters at each end are the same shape.
I was looking at the engraving on mine and on the picture of yours. I bet you a buck that Bruce Shaw did the engraving on yours also. The scroll pattern is the same but if you look closely you can see minor difference here and there.
