Saw a picture of a bowie from this maker over in the makers section, actually in the fixed blades for sale forum, and the minute I saw this I knew I had to have one! I've NEVER had, or even held a custom bowie before, closest I got to one was a Camillus OVB Southwestern Bowie, and it is not a custom. Anyway, I saw this one and thought that it had some of the cleanest lines I had ever seen on a knife, nothing fancy at all, just simple and well done from the picture I saw. Then I saw the price and knew I had to have one and so I have contacted Ray and he agreed to make me one like it. Instead of the blackwood for a handle, it will have cocobolo wood which is a personal favorite, and even though it is used a lot in knives I still think it is one of the nicest woods around.

So, what do you think and have I done a good thing?:D

Yes, you've done a REAL good thing. His knives are beautiful! Congrats.

Now the wait...

Ray makes what look to be very good value knives. Solid, if not inspired designs, with very good workmanship. I think you have made a good decision.

Cutter17,

I agree wholeheartedly! I'm having Ray make a Bowie for me as well.

The first knife I bought from Ray was one of his "Baby Bowie" knifes. Good price and solid clean workmanship. It did it's job well in the field and held it's edge on my deer. The Baby Bowie is a great in-the-field knife. A full size handle can be good when working butchering a big mule deer.
I commissioned a Seax, his first, and again it had solid workmanship for a good price. The person I gave it to loves it, both for the quality of the blade and look & feel overall. One of his small "Cricket" knifes went to a friend who guided me through my hunt. He has used a lot of knifes over the years, and likes his new knife. Then there is my wife's new birthday Bowie (a sweet knife) and I have one more "never done that before" on the planning stage with him:-)

Overall I like the sweep and flow of his knifes, and he is willing to try doing something new for him. I really like the look of his big knifes, but the little Cricket was a gem. A real tool to be used. Check them out.
Your knife will be a knife to use as well as to look at, all the ones I have or have ordered are good "users".

I have a pair of knives I bought from him a few months back. There is a thread I started in this forum with the pictures in it- check it out.

Clean simple and very very fast feeling. A great knife and a great value. You will not be disappointed!!

I think there were a couple of used ones over in the X if you need a quick fix while you wait!!

Ray has a clip point with O1 steel posted at the for sale forum on the makers forum that has really caught my eye. It has been sold but I'm thinking it will be my next one from Ray after the bowie.

Ray is making me a large camp knife right now. I loved the look of his knives also, and contacted him with a drawing. He replied with what he thought would be a cleaner design that he would like to make, and I liked his drawing better than my original. This knife will ride in my emergency bag in my truck everywhere I go, and I can't wait to get it!

I have 5 Laconico knives and I am scheming on my 6th. Ray is a gentleman of the highest order and he makes some AWESOME knives. He has a style all his own. You will not be sorry. Enjoy that knife.
