Just found this video of Ray Mears making some delicasies in the wild, good ideas for your camp kitchen in here.
On the left there is a bunch more on wilderness cooking that weren't there last time I watched everything he had on Youtube.

Is there anything this guy can't do? The more I see of him the more Stroud falls back into the shadows. (Even though he's Canadian!)

Ray is awesome. I've watch almost all of his stuff up to Wild Foods. Great info.

One thing about Ray is I would like to see him do 25 remote locations in 4 years with no food or luxury setup as he is used to for a week at a time.

I like Ray he is a good teacher but he sure as hell does not rough it or put himself out there like Les.

To compare the 2 is apples and oranges as far as I am concerned.

Skam

I didn't see any post on this thread comparing Les to Ray but it is a apple to orange comparision, we all have our heros and should to dismiss one for the other would have us miss out on a lot of skills and info.

You missed the first post bro.

But I agree. I think Ray is more like 'hiking, camping, bushcraft, survival'. More of an outdoors guy - all around. Like he says in the video linked "I want to show how to live in the woods - not just visit it." Les's shows were about SURVIVAL - not living.

Les's experiment and show was all survival.

Bear - well he is EXTREME!

More like EXTREME™.

But still fun to watch. ;)

HaHaha! Now that's funny!:D

Ray does a good job at just about everything he produces. He has never claimed to be out there "surviving" like Les did, and that's a huge difference. Sometimes when I watched Survivorman, I though poor old Les could have done with some education from the likes of Ray or Mors. In one of Les' shows he talks about eating cattails, but eats the wrong part. No wonder it tasted so crappy...
Still, both guys have put on some good shows for us to enjoy.
People can say what they want about Les, but he was out there doing it. Easy to criticize when you're not walking the walk.
Some guys don't like Ray, cuz he doesn't put himself deep into real survival situations. But why would he? He gets out there and does a lot of great stuff, perhaps some guys are just envious.

What I always like about Ray's food videos is the British politeness while eating even in the wilderness. You could have smeared butt gnats on a cracker and he and Gordon would still appear to be having a conversation over frau grau and caviar. You would definitely be eating well in camp with Ray there.

I've always like the little tricks he had for cooking crayfish in this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F36zxp8l_Kw&feature=related

I prefer Ray to the others, mostly because of the very erudite and learned way that he wraps all the stuff together. He is not just talking about staying alive, but living, and existing in the world, not just in the wilderness.

I also like the historical perspective he brings to the table, and the anthropological perspective, the way he relates his time in the outdoors to the whole of human experience.

But, he can be a bit new-age for me, I am a bit skeptical, he acts like he believes the abos when they talk about the spirit worlds, but then again, maybe he is just being a good presenter.

I particularly like that he is an un-abashed hunter and meat eater, which is a survival necessity in many cases, and a historical fact, that seems to be missed by some in the new-age 'be one with nature' crowd.

Les does a very particular thing, which I like, but which I find hard to watch episode after episode. I am not the person who is likely to be in a situation like he presents, but for those that are, the vast majority of TV watchers, he does a great show.

Bear is a nice guy, so far as I can tell, he seems really genuine and even boyish. But, I do not like to watch his show, a bit too sensationalist.

Well said and I agree.

Knowledge is power and Ray certainly has a wealth of it concerning outdoor living. If he were thrust into a true emargency survival situation.....he would most likely be just fine.

Ray is a realist.
Put a good kit together, without a lot of BS, hit the trail and have fun.Should you get lost for a few weeks:eek: with the proper kit and skills, you'll be fine.

These other idiots pretend their plane crashes and it's them VS. the Sahara desert with an ink pen and a comb.:jerkit:
That's OK , I suppose:confused: but come on." Lets squeeze the water out of a Boofalo turd"......... while the Winnebago is 50 feet away.
True "survival" can never be setup and done by actors.

I'm old. I used to like Mutual of Omahas wild kingdom and watch the stuff they drug out of the old Land Rovers to set up camp with. Croc Hunter was fun to watch too.
Minimal kits, lots of adventure .
