Ray Mears Extreme Survival : alaska

I wish I could afford to go to his survival school in England, that guy knows his stuff and his books are great.

Didn't I see him going after some of that brush with a Kukri?

I've been thinking about picking one of these up for campsite clearing and wood chopping -- maybe the one from A.G. Russell (11" blade). Anyone ever use one of these? Worth the money?

He has used lots of large blades in the bushcraft series, machetes, goloks and parangs. I have not used the A. G. Russell, but have many from HI and they are solid heavy wood working blades. Valiant makes another option, similar in goal but on a different path.

One thing which is interesting about Mears is how violent he is with his knives. He definately doesn't baby the puukko he normally carries. For example when batoning he doesn't lightly hold the handle, he presses down hard enough to keep it vertical, he will often pry and twist with the blade to split woods.

None of this is abusive in any sense, those types of blades are typically carbon steels and since there is no primary grind they are very strong, it was interesting however to see someone with a "bushcraft" perspective not treat the blades like glass and show how prying has its uses for efficient wood working.

I wish he would show a bit more detail on occasions though as often it isn't clear how he achieves some of his goals, the TV episodes might be condensed in this manner though over the DVD's.

Caine tryed e-bay.co.uk? lots of people on there selling them and im sure some would ship abroad. Prob an expensive way to do it though.....

Just remember that dvd's from Europe are for a different zone and you need a zone free dvd player or I think you can use your computer dvd feature.

I see for sale all over the uk but Im trying not to buy in lbs. and try to figure it all out

I don't know for this particular episode, but he generally uses a GB wildlife.

As for knives, he generally uses his "RM woodlore" knife (which is basically a thick -4mm or something- full tang puukko, -half?- custom carbon steel blade, largely overpriced, there are many custom makers that make decent copies for a lower price), or frosts moras (generally Swak or clipper, both stainless and carbon).

Is this the same guy who had a short series on the Travel Channel about maybe 2-3 years ago?

I could almost swear it was the same guy.

Thanks for the link, good watch so far.
