Ray Mears goes to GRANFORS BRUK

I believe it's 2 cm longer than the Wildlife axe and 200 grams lighter.

£8 (not including postage) more expensive than a RAT Cutlery Izula, so not a bad price all things considered.

I think I'll stick to my small forest and mini though.

Well the collar bit might be a useful touch but other than that I'm not seeing anything you guys couldn't get for a fraction of the price from Council Tool. I'd be very interested in seeing what someone could tweak out of a Council Tool job with a few mins on a belt side by side with one of these.

70 quid for a hatchet?
that makes Snow & Neally sound almost like a bargain!

Pricey, buy I actually like it. Looks like a more general purpose profile, and less of a limbing type. The little haft protector is kind of neat. 'Course you'd have to play with one to really make a decision about it.

Is that one an exclusive through the Ray Mears site? Wonder if other vendors might carry it at some point.

I like it compared to a lot of the lighter GB's, but it still doesn't do much for me. I'm probably in the minority though. :o

I have a larger Gransfors maul with the metal haft protector and I like the metal for that application. However, I'm a little surprised to see one on a small axe. I have some Plumb hatchets from the 50s and 60s with largely unscarred wood. In the experience of W&SS members, is this really useful?

i could se it being a good idea, if you don't have much experience with an axe.

I wonder if some metal shin pads might be more appropriate if one's aim is so bad they're chewing up the handle of a small one-handed axe :)

Axes are pretty cheap when you consider what most of us are willing to pay for a 4" blade.
