Ray Mears Shop (Mainly of interest for UK people)

Yeah some good kit but way too expensive! For instance the laplander folding saw £30:eek: I did a quick search and got one ordered for £16.

The woodlore knife is now £195 (used to be £150). Check out www.bisonbushcraft.co.uk for cheaper knives which are vertualy identical.

And the aussie basha £60:eek: there are larger and better quality ones available for £45.

Also you can get a crook knife made by frosts of sweden for about £15 as an alternative to woodlores £40.

Its not hard to find lower prices for gransfors too.

However I will say that the fire steel is the cheapest I have seen, and the belts not bad value.

Yeah, I would say they were a bit expensive as well.

Other places to get your fire-steel and Gransfor axes in the UK is www.survivalschool.co.uk . Got some good prices there, and everything includes P&P.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the web-addresses, I too found the products in the store to be on the expensive side.
I had a knife modellled after the Ray Mears one made by a custom Texas knifemaker with Desert Ironwood gripplates, tapered tang and CPM-440V made up years ago for $180 .

Willadams, a leather belt for 30 British Pounds, I bought a surplus Swedisch leather army belt made outr of prime thick tan saddle leather with all brass mountings for just over 8 BP mine had a generous 130 cm (4' 4" ) size (only need 40" thow ;) ) and it's industructable and my knives get super sharp when I lap them on the back of it.
I found that belt as surplus on a German Army Surplus website.

Concerning the Large Military Firesteels our Scouting group sold these for less but I'm also aware of the fact that we're no shop and have no "overhead".

I love the Bison models especially the one with the tan "neck" sheath and Firesteel.

I too was put off by the prices. I had been waiting with bated breath for the kit section to open, now am rather disapointed. I own though that I did buy a Small Forest Axe from them (prior to site getting up and running) and it arrived the next day, which for UK companies is the exception rather than the rule.

Well, I guess shops are shops, and everyone has to make a living :)

I too was a bit disappointed about the selection of stuff on Rays website. Have been checking back there every couple of days for the past 2 months. Mind you, they say that their going to be adding new stuff to it all the time, so maybe I'm expecting to much :D

Chris, I'm thinking about getting the Small Forest Axe and was wondering if you would recommend it?

Bagheera, I'm really going to have to do business with you one day :)

Thanks again for replying guys,

Orm

I e-mailed a link to this thread to Rachel from woodlore. I'll let you know if coments are made.

I have to agree guys, I have been waiting on this one too. Whats going on with Ray.....cant be that much cash in TV/Survival school/books ect Shame on him.B&Q knock out a more than adequate hatchet for half the price.
Good to see more Brits on here.

Nick. From what I can make out, Gransfor Bruks are THE axes to have. I've been reading around the forums and they sound great, so I'm saving for one now. However, I won't be getting it from Rays Shop, not really because of the price, but because there are local dealers who could use the money more.

Orm, Nick,

The GB axes are unbelievable, my Small Forest axe that I ordered from Globetrotter (Germany) arrived and it shaved the hairs of my lower left arm as good as some knives that I carefully hone and lap.

It kept this sharpnes even after I used it to cut through some half dried 2-3" branches that came of apple trees.

It's going with me to the Ardennes coming Friday when I'm off for a glorious week of holiday.

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera
