Does anyone know of a knife that is the same design and quailty of the Ray Mears Woodlore knife. His knife is a bit pricey at £195, although I like the design.

So can anyone help with a knife that would be a suitable alternative to this?

Wow...195 pounds for that knife? Looks remarkable Mora-like and the mora would probably perform just as well for all practical purposes. The Mora's only $8 US....sometimes handmade is just more expensive, not necessarily better...

Hi Lyon,

The woodlore knife is overpriced. It is made by Alan Wood who has a web site, though its not fully functioning yet, www.alanwoodknives.co.uk none of his other knives are that expensive. The woodlore knife used to be £150. I asked why the price increase and they told me cos it now includes the firesteel, but you can get these for £8-£10.

As for alternatives check out www.bisonbuscraft.co.uk almost identical knives but much cheaper, I am considering the bushcraft model. I even contacted Roger Harrington of bison buscraft with the specs of the woodlore knife, he said he would make me one for £155. Other alternatives; Frosts Mora S1 as used by Mors Kochanski, or a Helle Eggen.

At the moment I am using my Fallkniven F1 or my EKA nordic, both of which I highly recomend, plus a firesteel on a length of para cord.

If you are after any other woodlore recomended kit contact me, I have found better prices or cheaper alternatives to most of the kit.

Hope this helps

Hi Willadams

I have seen the bushcraft it's seem a nice knife and very simialr to the Woodlore. You will have to let me know when you get it what it is like.
I checked out the web site you suggested, very informative. These a couple of items there that I may purchase.

You may be able to answer this question, which I have posted a thread about. DO you have any experience of the Lofty Wiseman survival knife or know of any reviews?

In this size range try the Benchmade M2 Nimravious or the Spyderco Moran fixed blade. I own both and they are amazing blades for this task.

Doesn't the moran have an upswept blade? you would not be able to use that to strip bark, and it wouldn't be much good for carving.

I like the nimravus and have been considering adding one to my collection, you may be able to answer a question for me. Can you use the nimravus as a firesteel striker? Some of my knives I have had to square off the spine a little to get it to "bite" into the rod, but I would not want to do this on the nimravus cos it would remove the BT2 coating. If this is not a problem, is using the firesteel likely to wear off the BT2?

Cheers

Two quick points are in order here.

Alan Wood knives are every bit a custom knife. £=$ for knives is the more realistic price as in the UK we pay 17.5 % sales tax. Its not cheap but not outrageous either.

Ray Mears has put his knowledge to this knife and markets it as woodlore in his web shop. Add a few £ to make a small profit/cover overheads and then the difference in price from getting one direct from the maker isn't huge. I wouldn't be surprised if Ray still uses his original Alan Wood knife I saw him carry over 10 years ago. It would be quite cost effective if, as I suspect, it is still going strong. Thats the knife Ray Mears is comfortable with. What more can you ask of a knife?

There are some exceptional knives out there, many probably better made than an Alan Wood one (his high end knives are superb), but then there are a whole lot of not so good ones too. Personal taste and finance plays too big a part. Ray would probably say "just be happy you have a knife with you".

I would say the back of the M2 Nim after the BT2 is removed would make a nice striker in my humble opinion. I agree the swept point Moran is not ideal for the task. I was thinking more of the drop point model, though I own the swept point as a skinner myself.

I think the BM Nimravious is an excellent knife, perfect size and holds a great edge! Oh and M2 is tough as heck.
