Do any of you have this video?
I was wondering how good it was.
I wish they had it on DVD as I don't have a VCR here where I sharpen my knives.
Anyone have the video and could they burn me a DVD copy of it so that I can watch it while I use my sharpener? :D

Yes I've had the Razor Edge Knife Sharpening video for quite some time now. I am surprised that they haven't made one in DVD by now. Spyderco has a DVD for their 204 Sharpmaker and I would think all the other people with videos would follow. One thing you want to keep in mind with the Razor Edge video is that you are going to have to watch it at least 3 to 4 times to really absorb it. Well at least I did. There is a lot of good information on it.

Thanks JD.
I emailed them about it but I doubt they have a DVD as it isn't listed on their site.
Too bad there isn't a pass around for this video.

Hi JD,

Can you tell me what the video contains? If I get their book, do I still need to get the video?

Thanks.

I don't have the book; I'll probably eventually buy it. But to me, you most definately want the video. Watching their technique, and listening to the hows and whys, etc. is probably the best education I've ever gotten with regard to sharpening.

Absolutely buy the video. The book gives you a good idea of what to do, and if you basically understand how to sharpen already, that may be enough. But if you have any questions whatsoever, watching an expert actually sharpen his knife really answers them all conclusively. I bought that video as I was first learning to sharpen, and it's one of the best purchases I made.

Hi Joe,

What are the contents of the video, are they showing how to sharpen freehand or with the guide? Also besides showing how to sharpen knives, does the video show how to sharpen axes, lawn mowers etc.

Do I buy the video and not the book? or are the 2 items complementing each other?

Thanks very much.

As I mentioned before, I don't have the book. The video is, in my opinion, a must (to actually "get" the idea). If you are looking to get the best info, but perhaps not have to spend $20 on both (i.e. you want to pick one or the other) -- I'd say go with the video.

This thread is actually helpful to me, also. I'm close to getting one of their systems because the Sharpmaker I have doesn't do things quickly enough for me. Fantastic for touch ups, but not fast enough for reprofiling, etc. I was gonna buy the book, but now I think maybe I don't need it...?! Watching is probably better than reading - less likelihood of misinterpretation.

Hi edb,

What does the video contain?
Also when (which year) did you get the video?

Thanks

It appears there is only one version of the video, unless I'm mistaken. The one I have (which I believe is the only version they recorded) was made in the mid-1980's, and it sort of shows - except that the content is excellent. They discuss the advantages of a sharp blade versus a dull one, then show you step-by-step how to take a factory (i.e. dull, in the instance they show) edge to razor sharp. You see basically the whole process. At the end, they recap the highlights.

It turns out I watched mine again last night; I hadn't watched it for probably a year or more. Saw a couple details I'd forgotten about...
