I'm wondering if anyone has tried the Razor Edge "Mousetrap Steel" as a daily touch-up device for their EDC folder(s)?
How does it compare to, say, a few light strokes on the fine rods of a Sharpmaker?

I have other RES products and like 'em so I'm interested in this new device.
Thanks.

Granted it looks neat. But seems a little complex for a steel. I've been using a regular steel for the ever since I've been "playing" with knives.

If you got the money and like to use it on things that end up collecting dust or getting sold at yard sales or ebay, go for it. Otherwise I'd save some money and get a regular steel.

Of course if someone tells me a good reason for it, I'll be glad to change my mind. :)

The Razor-Edge steel isn't an abrasive so it will not remove a significant amount of metal like the Sharpmaker. All the steel does is attempt to align the edge of your knife, the softer your knives the more benefit you will see. The advantage that this has over a regular steel is twofold. First off since it has a preset angle you can hone with a much greater precision, and not have to be concerned about over steeling when you went a bit too obtuse. The other factor is since you are hitting both sides of the edge at once the edge doesn't get folded back and forth like it does on a regular steel, and thus the "Mousetrap" steel should produce an edge with a *much* longer lifetime. CATRA makes a similar product for about half the price. I have never used either or them.
