What's the best way to achieve a razor sharp edge on a
Busse? I currently own a Tri- Angle Sharpmaker but I
can't seem to get that razor edge on my Busse's. I'm
also considering buying one of the Diamond sharpeners
like Lansky. Any suggestions?: (

Bravado,
If you aren't using a strop, this may be the problem.

Pick up a strop or make one and I think you will get that razor edge right back.

I've got some threads on sharpening I'll dig up and post later if someone else doesn't beat me to it. :D:D

Eric, I have my great grandaddy's strop and it works a treat on the NO. I would be very interested in any sharpening tips you have as I hate it. Busse would have to be the easiest knife I have ever sharpened though, and this is one of the main reasons I enjoy them so much.

Looking forward to the post(s)...

Here's a great thread on Field Sharpening. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum39/HTML/000317.html By Cliff Stamp

There's a large amount of data to be gleaned from this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=168490&highlight=busse+sharpening
and more info here
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=164564&highlight=busse+sharpening

and here is a quote from Cliff Stamp, this is from a post about 1 1/2 years ago sorry I haven't found the thread but will continue to look.
"My current sharpening method is as follows :
-touch up with strop, first on canvas then leather + Lee Valley CrO compound
if this fails to produce a high quality edge I will turn to :
-a few passes on 800 grit ceramic rod
If this fails to leave an agressive edge I need to remove a little more metal so I try :
-a few passes on a 600 grit 12" DMT diamond rod
-touch up with strop and if necessary, a few passes on 800 grit ceramic rod
Afterwhile even this stops working as I have put a visible secondary bevel on the edge. Then I have to back up one step further :
-SiC wet/dry sandpaper on the convex bevel
-SiC waterstone on the flat bevel
-jump up to finer grits of the same
-touch up with strop and if necessary a few passes on 800 grit ceramic rod
Another method is to use a buffer / slack belt sander, if you have the skill to do this it is much quicker.
-Cliff"

Hopefully Cliff will stop by and correct me if I've posted something that is incorrect or unclear.

I hope this helps.

Chiseen,
I have it in my own personal Busse FAQ, unfortunately, my FAQ has grown to over 30 pages and it isn't always easy to find what I'm looking for. ;):D:D

Eric,

Sounds like a book in the making!

You think I could take a peek at it? :D

I have seen it, but since questions about stroping/sharpening come up regularly I thought it would be nice to add to the FAQ.

After checking that link again, noticed there was the strop video. A picture is worth a 1K words... That should help me and other peeps. :)

Say, how about making a "sticky" link to the faq in this forum?

Chiseen
You raise a good point about the FAQ's. I can make a sticky link to it so its easy to find, however, maybe there are some questions that come up regularly that we could add to the FAQ sheet.

If anyone knows of some frequently asked questions, lets hear them and maybe I can put something together.

Thanks
Eric
