Hello all,

I have a few straight razors that are in need of a new edge, and while as much as I'd like to do it myself all I seem to be doing is grinding away more steel then necessary. I think they just need to be sent out for professional work and I can stick to stropping them.

Who do ya'll send yours out to for sharpening?

Thanks in advance,

Brets-ftw

Search for Seattle Edge. I don't know about razors but since he got my knives so sharp my RAT. . . .
I was going to say something funny, but all I could come up with was became a member of MENSA

Seriously check him out.

Please don't send your razors to a knife guy. Totally different technique needed.

Look up Glenn Sefsick of badger and blade or straight razor place. Handle is gssixgun. His website is Gemstar Customs. Also, Lynn, the owner of Straight Razor Place has honed several thousand razors and gives a killer edge. Contact info at straightrazordesigns.com.

+1, Glenn is awesome. Nothing against knife sharpeners, but razors are just way different and require very different materials and techniques.

That's what I figured, I mean I can get a hair whittling edge freehand just fine, but these razors are so incredibly different.

Will definitely check those guys out, thank you

Absolutely different. The least of which is the absence of burr development. Bevel setting is done on 1000 grit and is polished to at least 8000 and usually more. Some steels can hold an edge up to 30,000! I think some of the higher grits are diminishing returns, but an 8000 edge is a good shaver at the least.

I have sharpened hundreds if not thousands of knives to HHT3 or higher...recently I got into honing razors and, let's just say I am not ready to start offering my services as a razor honer.

It's not just grit size, and it's not just grit type...there is a bit more to it. ;)
