I have been searching for a new benchstone setup. I've worn out both sides of my Ark stones. I did some careful research and brought the long list of products down to two options. Option one: Razor Edge Ultimate Professional System with the beautiful oak box. Option 2: Norton water stones in 220/1000/4000/8000 grit stones. I've never heard a bad thing about Razor Edge and Norton stones are well known for spectacular results when used properly. Both systems are the same price, about $170,00. Not alot to some people, but to me that's a tidy sum. I have my own almost worthwile sharpening / Knife repair business in my neiborhood to put a little money in my pocket because I've been out of work for a month and need to pay bill. Many thanks to my wife for her supprt.

Now To the Crux of my post. I called RazorEdge 18005411458. I simply inquired about the grit value of there hones in the Ultimate Professional System. I was told a flat out NO. They said it was private information not to be shared with consumers. I didn't ask what the stones were made of or anything that could be considered a "company secret". I simply asked how many grit hones they featured in the Ultimate Professional Kit. I was told by three(3) different people that there was no way I could be told what grit value the hones were. Even when I let them know it was the deciding factor of whether they got my $170.00 or Norton did. Needless to say I ordered the Full set of Norton Waterstones and a guide(not Razoredge) to go with them.

Why would someone be so secretive about information that greatly helps the costomer. I say It's so important to me because I want to give the people's knives that I sharpen the best, smoothest, highly polished edge possible so they come back time and time again. My ark stones did well but I wanted to try something new. If the RazorEdge Ultimate Professional System had a say 4000 grit hone they would have got my money and not Norton.

I emailed Razor Edge awhile ago asking the same thing. They were very polite, but did not reveal any information.
I can say that I get very good results with their 6 inch stones together with their clamp and their foldable steel, though. :)

By the way, what guide did you buy?

I'm in the market for some benchstones as well. I read this post Friday afternoon, and checked out their website. Curious about the grit, myself, I called the 1-800# listed in the above quote that evening. The very polite, friendly lady who answered the phone did not know the grit, but said that she would have someone that would know call me first thing Monday morning. I gave her my name, address, and cell phone #.
She called me back herself this morning.
She's sending me a catalog.
Their coarse is 280.
Their fine is 800.

Reader beware. Check out people's story before jumping on the bashing bandwagon.
Between this and the "Benchmade interaction" thread, I could just :barf:

Ask around, Razoredge is known for not letting folks in on the grit and composition of there hones.

I can't say much about their customer service. But I would like to add that they have a trial period with their kit. You can use it for something like 60 days and if you aren't happy, full refund. I have foudn my Razor Edge stones to be great on knives, especially on carbon steel blades. The fine hone gives a nice toothy but semi-polished edge. Good for slicing.

Thanks for the details Owen, did they reference what scale they were using for the grit? Those are some low numbers compared to the waterstone scale for example. It is probably similar to the Arkansas scale which would place the fine stone at between the hard and black hard Arkansas hones.

16,452, aka TTO, and a host of other alias', all banned BTW, is now up to his old tricks of sowing dissention. You Ahole.:barf: :barf: :barf:

Cliff, I don't know. Didn't ask. I don't know much about the different scales that manufacturers use, though it seems like I've read about the difference before. Is there a chart somewhere that compares the different scales? If the stuff they send me includes this info, or I call back before ordering and find out, I'll let you know.

I didn't see who was posting the complaint. Just saw that a manufacturer was refusing to give details about their product (which I was also interested in). When I first read it, I thought "well, screw that company, they won't give the grit of their stones, I'm not interested". Knowing how misinformation gets spread around on the internet, I decided to check it out for myself.

I thought that was excellent customer service, and am probably going to buy a coarse and fine stone to try out. Whatever the grit, I like the sound of the results people have gotten with these products based on doing a search of the forums. Funny how that all worked out.

I agree - it's just TTO, trying to harm yet another company, for his own fun & games.

When, O Catiline, do you mean to cease abusing our patience ? How long is that madness of yours still to mock us ? When is there to be an end of that unbridled audacity of yours, swaggering about as it does now ? Do not the mighty guards placed on the Palatine Hill – do not the watches posted throughout the city – does not the alarm of the people, and the union of all good men – does not the precaution taken of assembling the senate in this most defensible place – do not the looks and countenances of this venerable body here present, have any effect upon you ? Do you not feel that your plans are detected ? Do you not see that your conspiracy is already arrested and rendered powerless by the knowledge which everyone here possesses of it ? What is there that you did last night, what the night before – where is it that you were – who was there that you summoned to meet you – what design was there which was adopted by you, with which you think that any one of us is unacquainted ?

Shame on the age and on its principles ! The senate is aware of these things; the consul sees them; and yet this man lives. Lives ! aye, he comes even into the senate. He takes a part in the public deliberations; he is watching and marking down and checking of for slaughter every individual among us. And, we gallant men that we are, think that we are doing our duty to the republic if we keep out of the way of his frenzied attacks.

You ought, O Catiline, long ago to have been led to execution by command of the counsel. That destruction which you have been long plotting against us ought to have already fallen on your head.

What ? Did not that most illustrious man, Publius Scipio, the Pontifex Maximus, in his capacity of a private citizen, put to death Tiberius Gracchus, though but slightly undermining the constitution ? And shall we, who are the consuls, tolerate Catiline, openly desirous to destroy the whole world with fire and slaughter ? For I pass over the older instances, such as how Caius Servilius Ahala with his own hand slew Spurius Maelius when plotting a revolution in the state. There was – there was once such virtue in this republic that brave men would repress mischievous citizens with severer chastisement than the most and authoritative decree against you, O Catiline; the wisdom of the republic is not at fault, nor the dignity of this senatorial body. We, alone – I say it openly – we, the consuls; are wanting in our duty.

They are "GRITTY" enough to cram down your throat!!!! They were rude to you because they knew it was DENNIS SWEETSTER, the "EVERY knife forums" MASTER-TROLL:barf: :barf:

Now, you "allege" to own a new Strider GB. WTF would you need to sharpen it?

Just spreading more crap, huh?

Lets see, who has a more credible story:
OwenM: An absolute great guy, honest to a fault, lots of experience and knowledge and a frequent contributor to many discussions. Ownen's word is gospel as far as I'm concerned, this thread shows exactly why. He doesn't take things at face value, he probes and investigates. I have nothing but the highest regard for Owen.

Member #whatever aka he's using today.
An A$$hole no good troll. Yah, this isn't wine and cheese, but the truth is the truth, ban me for a personal attack, that's fine. Dennis Sweetser (not his real name I am sure) is a first class dickhead, troll $hitbag. That is putting things mildly. Why Spark allows you to be here is beyond me, I disagree with that decision. Troll's like like #1737474843 represent everything I despise about the interent: arm-chair commandos engaging in one handed fanasty life because they have no character in the real world.
Dennis Sweetser,
no matter what name you use, you will never be accpeted here, becasue you are a vile piece of garbage (AKA a putrid piece of $hit)

You are a liar. Plain and Simple, A LIAR.
You have no integrity, you are worthless.
