Okay, first of all, yes, that's an Ontario RAT-3 in these pictures, but the sheath modification should be pretty much the same. As I understand it the RAT-3 and the RC-3/ESEE-3 are practically the same, except the ESEE has a 3/8" longer handle. Anyway...

I was looking for a good way to carry the knife in my pocket without it sliding around.

All I did was take a piece of 1" nylon strap, the pocket clip from a $1 measuring tape, the chicago screws that came with the knife, and one addition nut and bolt to rig this together.

Here's the other side.

Better shot of the little nut and bolt that fasten the pocket clip to the strap.

This is what it looks like poking out of my pocket.

Yeah, it's not very pretty, but it gets the job done and always keeps the knife comfortably where I want it. It hangs vertically in the rear of my right pocket, just where I've carried big folders for years. Heck, it's not even in the way when I'm digging around in my pocket for change.

Just thought I'd share in case someone else wanted to try it (or improve upon it).

Nice work! Thanks for sharing. Wish I could carry a fixed blade in my pocket. It's a no-no with the po-po around here.

I like it

I've been thinking of doing something similar, you just got the ball rolling!

Thanks for posting!

Good idea!

A couple suggestions (you asked!):

1) Burn the cut edges with a match/lighter/candle to keep them from fraying - you can also sear the holes with a hot nail or something where the Chicago screws go so that they don't pull the nylon.

2) If you wanted it more "fixed" you could replace the nylon with some stiff plastic or even kydex (can cut it with a razor) and rig it up the same way - this would prevent the rig from creeping up when you unsheath your blade.

Kudos for the ingenuity!!!

Thanks everyone!

I did singe the ends with a lighter, it just looks frayed because it's cheap, low quality webbing that came off of a crappy tool belt from the 99 Cent Store. I just moved to a new state and left all my little goodies like decent mil-spec webbing behind (sadly).

I kinda like the flexibility of the strap. That way the sheath creeps up with the knife until I pop it free with my thumb. Then the opening of the sheath is usually protruding just a little from my pocket, making it much easier/safer to put the knife back in.

Nonetheless, If I were to make an improved one, I would definitely want some better webbing, a stiffened or reinforced section near the pocket clip to make it easier to clip on and off, and maybe some metal grommets for the chicago screws. Though, I might try that hot nail idea some time.

Once again, thanks everyone!
