I love bush craft and hiking in the woods and I need a knife... something that will just be perfect for hunting, b atoning, bushcraft, and anything else. any thoughts?

RC4 would be a great choice. Easily packable size, stout as hell. It takes a likin and keeps on without complaint. It takes batoning without any problem at all.

As for size it is the perfect size for bushcraft work and most every survival task. I usualy take along one of my kukri's for the heavy chopping chores.

RC-4 will do fine batoning. Limited only by its length. Thickness isn't needed for that task though. A 1/8" blade will be just as robust for batoning as a 3/16", you just end up having to pound the 3/16" blade harder to sink that thicker steel into the wood. But it works fine and its thickness provides good niche partitioning from the RC-3. Great all around blade - the RC-4.

I know I'm in minority here, but I am most fond of the RC-5. It's thick and heavy but that knife fits me. I think the RC-4 would be a good choice. Your just limited on blade length in batoning, other than that it's good to go and very versitle.

I did some batoning with my RC-4 last weekend and it worked great. It took about two medium raps to get the blade in to the wood, then after that the wood pretty much split itself and the weight of the baton was almost all that was needed to push the knife through the wood. Great knife. Won’t be my last RAT.

 Great post kgd :D

Hell, you can split wood with any length knife. I've split 3" diameter logs with my Izula by batoning it a little way into each side to start a couple of splits, then carved some quick wooden wedges and pounded them into the splits. Just takes a little longer. :D

The best post I have seen in a while
