Well I decided to try out the RIT dye on the canvas micarta scales on my RC-4. It is the kelly green dye and turned out to be a little darker than I expected, but I really like it. It added some contrast to the knife instead of being basically all one color.

Looks great. Does it stay put? Or, do you get it on your hand? Does it seem to have penetrated pretty deeply?

So far, so good. It seems to have penetrated deeply and it does not scratch off or come off on my hand. As soon as I get a chance to get out in the woods, I'll post a follow up and see how it does with sweaty hands and soem good use ;)

nice! i like the contrast

in my experience, it penetrates it deeply. there are plenty of people who dye'd their pmags with rit and that's a hard plastic. someone even cut off a section of it to show the penetration. micarta is very absorbent and i have yet to have any bleeding on the knives i used rit with (the others i colored with sharpie which does bleed a little but not really noticeable).

I've had really good success with liquid leather dye (for shoes, belts, etc. available at Tandy and other places). It doesn't bleed at all.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I'm liking it. It was just a little too much tan for my tastes, so the change is good for me.
