rc-5 or rc-4

It comes down to what you intend on doing with the knife, and personal preference. The 4 & 5 have entirely different designs. The 4 is your typical Rat design, moderately thick with a flat grind... while the 5 is SUPER thick and heavy with a saber grind, and slightly longer than the 4. I honestly think the smaller RC-4 is a better choice for most typical tasks, but... if you think you'll be doing some heavier tasks like chopping or batoning, the 5 is probably better.

Regardless, you can't go wrong with either knife.

Both good knives. But it's kind of like asking if you should drive a tank to work, or a pickup truck. The four is a great knife. If I carried one knife, that'd be it. But, I almost never have just one. That leaves to four usually sitting at home, and the six and izula doing duty. Thinking of pairing the four with the junglas or a machete though.

I now carry on hikes and when camping the RC-4.

but there's nothing wrong with having both! you know you want em, just get both and then decide. :D

I would pick the RC-5 because it in the end will prove more usefull, its extra blade lenght and weight will surely help when hacking through brush and batoning through wood (split wood is sooo much easier to start a fire with than is whole logs)

if you'll have an RTAK II along, the -4 will be plenty of knife for camp tasks, dressing small game, etc....
If you're asking "what one knife" then the ESEE-5 or -6 would be my choice.

if it's the cats you're worried about i'd bring a .44  otherwise the esee4 would be my choice of the 2 mainly 'cause it's lighter for you're needs and the 5 is pretty hard core and not necessary for hiking :D

I'd go RTAK II and RC4 myself.

Consider how huge the RC5 is:
(they're not this pretty anymore)

The RC 5 is not a bushcraft knife. By no means, as it was not meant to be. The RC 4 is better for almost everything, save chopping and perhaps batoning. In bushcraft, that is.

If your hiking I would go for the 4.. besides you have the RTAK don't need two weights tied to ur hip and leg :D

As I've posted elsewhere, I think the perfect combo is the IZULA with the RC-6 PE. I ordered and just recieved my RC-4PE and I love the way it feels but it's not big enough for those "bigger" jobs. For everything else the IZULA will be more than enough. I guess I'll just have to suck it up and wait until I can afford to splurge on a 5 or 6.

I have an rc-4 and it is more than enough of a knife for any camp chores including batoning. It is also much lighter and I have a mochasin ranger which is a very very similar grind(if not the same) As the esee-5 and I find it to thick for anything but batoning and even for batoning I prefer a thinner knife

I plan the RC-4 being my next purchase, but I don't find the RC-5 heavy. It really comes down to your planned use.
