so i know that there is a difference, but i was wondering what everyone else thinks would be the best first purchase? what would be the best all around knife in the woods?

i would get the ESEE6, the 5 was designed to pry pilots out of downed aircraft. now if you need to pry yourself out of a plane go with the 5 ;)

well both of them are rather short for being a dedicated chopper but the 6 could do it in a pinch, if you are in the market for a chopper i would suggest the junglas

I just picked up the ESEE 6, and I love it. 3/16" ought to be plenty thick for 99% of your tasks in the woods (and if not, the no-questions-asked warranty should ease your mind in that regard), and the full flat grind makes splitting wood a lot easier, IMO. The balance on the knife is perfect, and considering its size and weight, it's a decent chopper. It's a great mid-sized survival/woods knife.

I bought the 6 for my first esee and I love it. It does a pretty good job chopping but is still manageable for smaller tasks. If you buy a 6 and a izula you will have it all pretty much covered.

Cant lose with either one.

I think it would come down to two things. weight and comfortability...The RC5 is heavier than the six, both have the same handle except the rc6 has a choil.

The RC5 is flat out a tougher knife, but the RC6 is much more user friendly for the average woodsman.

your call bro..

The 5 is a hefty beast - It was my first ESEE knife. The 4 and 6 are much more nimble, but I wanted a knife that was basically to serve as a HEST (and it was before the HEST came out). That said, I EDC an Izula.

It's a SERE knife, and that's what it's great at... not for delicate bushcraft (carving gnomes out of sticks), but if can cut/hack/smash just about anything needed to keep you alive when the chips are down.

I personally hit the twigs with an Ontario 'chete and my RC-5. The RC-5 is also one of my 3 select EDC blades due to it's thickness and ability to handle a slightly lower edge grind than the thinner RCs without fear of chipping out. It will never be a chopper however.

These knives have two totally different attitudes and I'd say performance wise, they are just as capable as each other. Very similar blade lengths, same steel, both have great grips. If you can, wrap your hands around both of em before you make your decision.

If you're only going be chopping I'd recommend a 10"+ blade, but for general camp use the RC-6 is great !

I agree completely. With either the 5 or the 6, you are going to have to compromise some on chopping ability. They are great at it for their size, but not compared with a larger, heavier blade designed mainly for the purpose of chopping.

I hope this isn't changing the thread topic, but I'm beginning to think that the Junglas is a better option than the ESEE-5 if any serious amount of chopping is planned.

I really want an ESEE-5 but I'm beginning to think that what I should actually get is a Junglas. For chopping up tree limbs for campfire wood, an actual machete is better than a massively strong survival knife, and the weight isn't that much more. A machete isn't an all around camp knife, which the OP was asking for, but the consensus here seems to be that the ESEE-6 isn't that but that the 6 and an Izula is.

I'm just thinking that for me the combo may end up being Junglas and RC-3.
