Man, I'm just poluting the forum today huh?

I made this little kit up the other day for the bottom of my RC-5 sheath pouch. It was just going to be fishing but I had some extra room so I added some fire to it, can never have too much fire.:D

The tin came from Cracker Barrel, I picked up 10 tins of crappy, sugarfree mints just to have the really nice tins. I painted it OD with a coat of matte clear, just so it looked more at home in the kick-ass Eagle Ind. sheath.

Here's the contents.

A few sizes of hooks, ten pound line, four pound line, snare wire, exacto blade, egg sinkers, clamp on sinkers, a few plastic baits, matches, striker and a cotton ball.

The matches will get replaced with cut down waterproof strike anywheres whan I get some more.

Just thought I'd share.

Can we get a shot of the tin in the pouch? Nice set up by the way. I started "stuffing my pouch" and the next thing you know I am bloated. Sometimes simple is better.

Askith and ye shall recieve....ith:

This is my normal setup, Leatherman Surge and fire kit on the outside.

As you can see, it slips right in.

And it fits all the way down below the elastic band, keeping it in there nice and tight and leaving plenty of space above it for other stuff.

Can't fit my leatherman in with it in there but one or the other can go into a pocket or the leatherman sheath.

Wow that is a great set up. I haven't played with my leathermen yet .... until tonight. The more I think about it...the more I like the leatherman set up. Cause the RC5 is a little portly ( don't you dare say fat) the blade on a leatherman is highly useable.

wow, what a nice set up. I may have to source some tins to make little survival kit out of. Great idea. thanks for the pictures

I just wrapped a few iodine water purifying tablets in foil and stuck them in.

Knew I forgot sumpin.

I wouldn't do that. The iodine is very corrosive and will break down your fishing line, as well as your nylon sheath. It will rust the hell out of your tin, razor blade, and hooks. Basically, it will make everything useless in in a short time.

I ended up with a red tint to a compass from doing something similar to this. In fact, what wasn't rusted, was tinted red. Even my first aid stuff was red. The aspirins were red and all meds, even sealed meds were red. The whole thing was a loss. The small LED was corroded to the point that it to was useless.

Now I use bleach in mini kits, and swap it out every 6 months. Iodine is stored ONLY in glass with a sealed in wax lid to keep everything else safe.

Thanks Bro, I was wondering if there would be any negatives to it.

I'll take them out and put them back into my bigger kit.

Yes, that iodine can be some nasty stuff.

I didn't say what I thought of your kit. I was kind of in a hurry to go watch the Bulls play, but they are being abused like a red headed step child.

Anyway, I am not sure what you plan on using that razor blade for, but if it is just to clean fish, you might want to add a thumb tack to your kit. I have found that a simple thumb tack works great for attaching a the blade to a stick for a handle. Sometimes you need a wrap of thin wire as well if you are skinning an animal. The blade tends to rock a little if you don't. The combo of the thumb tack and wire keep it in place pretty good.

Split rings of two different sizes, and safety pin would be nice to add for a trap trigger. Also, I made a little adjustment to the trigger posted on RAT's web site. Instead of having the split ring held in place by a notched stick and on top, put the split ring facing down and use a safety pin to hold it in place. Just open the pin and slide the 550 or string inside the pin and close it. Now fold the split ring down and slide the safety pin up the string and over the split ring to hold the trigger in place. Bait the safety pin and when it is pulled down, the trap will be triggered and you will not loose any parts to your kit. Plus you do not have to make any other parts either.

I hope I explained this clearly. :o

If you want something to treat water, look at those small perfume sample vials. The small vials are 8mm x 45mm and hold enough to treat a full gallon of clear water with 19 drops of bleach. The large one will hold 30 drops. It just depends on what fits in your tin.

Also, I sure am happy to hear your pup is doing great.

Here's a thought on a survival tin. I use Skoal Cans. They're plastic, have a darn near water tight seal, (although when my wife washes them in my jeans pocket the skoal doesn't taste as fresh... They don't mildue, rust or stain things around them from rusting.

If anyone wants to try this method and doesn't know what to do with the skoal that comes with the ready-made survival plastic "tin", just ziplock it up and I'd be happy to help out my fellow brothers here by providing my mailing address. ;)

PS Did I mention that the off brand wintergreen varieties come in an OD green color plastic?
