RC-5 Scales swapped out on Rat 5

So, I am unfortunate enough to have learned about R.A.T. (IE: Randalls Adventure & Training) and how good the knives are.

I was looking for a new camp/outdoor knife and settled on a RAT-5 I found at a local knife store. I had read some about the name change to ESEE and the split, but didnt realize how far it went until AFTER I bought the knife and found these forums.

I loved the knife and have seen how much ESEE cares about its image in the survival training and gear world. So I bought me a H.E.S.T. to EDC to further support ESEE.

Well now onto my question, since I bought the Ontario Knife version of the RAT-5 and not the RC-5 in which I really wanted, is there any way to get a set of the RC-5 scales with the bow drill divot to further the diversity of my RAT-5?

With the recent purchase of the H.E.S.T. I am broke and can not justify buying another 5 at the moment, but when funds come available I will probably purchase a Junglas to further my ESEE love. That is if I can resolve my current issue with my Ontario Rat :)

Thanks for any help and I look forward to reading more about the ESEE brand and how far they can go. I believe they will make it much, much farther.

They don't sell scales seperately because they final fit them to the individual blade.

If you feel bad, sell the Ontario and buy the ESEE. :D

If I were you I would drill my own bow drill divot and start saving for your

junglas. :D

Sorry man, your not going to find any scales available anywhere.

Also, the RAT-5 and the ESEE/RC-5 are going to have slightly different profiles and the scales wouldn't fit at all or would fit very poorly.

Another thing, if you like the RAT-5, you would most likely not like the ESEE/RC-5. Twice as thick, it's a very different knife.

I would also just drill my own bowdrill divot if I were in your shoes.

to make your own bow drill divot, find a drill press and a 1/2" bit.
with knife in sheath, clamp it to the drill press table.
Drill about 1/8" in (when the bit just barely starts to make a vertical shoulder in the hole)
you're done!

Fair enough, thanks for the information regarding the scales and difference between the RAT 5 and RC-5.

And thanks for the bow drill divot tutorial. Looks like I will try this out.

Thanks again.

forgot to add:
do your setup and test drive with a scrap of wood the same thickness as the scales - that way you can be sure to set your depth stop so you don't drill all the way thorugh a scale and into the tang of the knife.
