i just built my first debris hut using only my RC-5, it is my perfect knife!!! and it chops great

Also, what did you need an RC-5 for to build a debris hut? The last one's we built on our training course were made from debris found on the ground. If something needed cutting to length it was easily broken. Maybe we're talking apples and oranges here on shelters?

To make a good debris shelter you need a minimum of 2 foot of dead leaves, straw, etc on the shelter frame to make it waterproof.

With all that said, I give the producer of this video credit for being honest in his film. And we appreciate the post. Still wondering where and when and what for he used the RC-5

Understand now. Again, appreciate the post and the video. You might try making everything from dead stuff next go 'round. Use a back bone pole that's a little longer than your body and one end should be about crotch high and the other end on the ground. Stack smaller stuff against it to form a tent shape, then start piling all types of dead leaves and straw on top. Dead stuff will lay flatter and make it more waterproof. Green stuff does not work well for this. You can see some photos here of a debris shelter we built: http://www.jungletraining.com/woodland-ops.htm

I've got to get myself a RAT. I've accepted the fact that I will own several, so debating on which one to get first for a general purpose woods and carry knife (RC-3 or 4) has become a moot point for me.

I learn something in almost every thread in the RAT forum. Bushcraft, survival skills, always something new, so thanks guys!

BTW, nice RC-5!

I am doing this 4 a contest,,the pries is a 500$ para tepee,i think we will have 2 spend the night in our shelter and it will be raining here 4 the next 3 days here. And it is not a proper debris hut its more of a water proof shelter

live and learn mistakes teach lessons, and i think i am going 2 learn a lesson tonight in a rainstorm in my hut...i will beef it up tonight with 2 foot of leaves

Don't worry if the leaves are wet on the ground, they work better when they're that way. Take a poncho, lay it out flat and start scraping all the leaves you can into it. When you get a load, go dump it on your structure. Mound it up real good - at least 2 feet thick all around. Also, put a good layer in the bottom so it will be comfortable and warm. Make your opening as small as possible. Crawl in. Your body heat will dry the wet leaves on the inside and you will be comfortable if you built it right.

I WOULD LIKE 2 ADD THAT WE ARE ONLY ALOUD 2 USE 3 ITEMS...I CHOSE MY rc-5 A LIGHT MY FIRE ARMY FIRE-STEEL AND MY 32OZ GOUYET DESIGN WATER BOTTLE

I'm liking this contest a lot! My kinda rules!

So you don't have a poncho. You still have plenty of time to gather leaves in your arms and throw them on top of your structure. If you have a long sleeve button down shirt on, use that as a leaf gatherer.
