RC-6 vs RC-10

Hi All,

So with the RC-10 coming out soon why would someone choose the RC-6 vs the RC-10?

Caveat #1. I have an RC-6 and will be buying a RC-10 (or whatever its called) whenever it comes out, regardless of what anyone says. :D

Caveat #2. I'm a burbs dweller who will probably never use either, but would like to know they are there.

Caveat #3. I fully expect the Rat guys to come in and say both are pointless get a Machete instead, however if that happens I demand that a new RC-10 picture be posted, preferably with a RC-6 or 4 next to it.

I wouldn't want to carry the RC-10 on my belt.

I think that the RC-6 and a folding saw would cover most situations.

Rc ten is huge. A knife that size isn't something you'd carry unless you're planning to use it. An rc6 is still large, but much smaller, and easier to carry just about
any time.

I also plan to get the ten/ whatever it's named. It'll be used for splitting wood while hiking

Because it's smaller? Is this a trick question?

The RC-5, 4, 3, H.E.S.T., Izula are all smaller, but I wouldn't want to be stuck trying to baton through wood with an Izula. ;)

So no its not a trick question. I guess I imagine the 6 and 10 as survival knives that you stick in a bag (along with other smaller knives and supplies) in case whatever happens. And in that case I'd think bigger is better.

How can you even begin to comment and compare when the knife is not even produced yet?

I can tell you right now I wouldn't carry a knife that big on my belt.

As for the performance, I think a lot of comments are just based on a 10 inch knife vs. a 6 inch knife.

I'd rather have the 10. I'm not going to carry either on my side anyways, so that's not a factor. Both would be strapped to the pack. That being the case, I would rather have the more chopperish and machete-like of the two. I've discovered that I'm not real big on the larger "camp knife" blades like 6 or 7" long. I never take my BK7 out anymore. I use it around the house, but that's about it. If I'm going to go big, it's because I want something that will be a good chopper as well as a good vine and limb remover. The 6 just isn't large enough to do that. One thing that I do like about the 10 is that it will be almost the same length as a 12" machete, but carry the swinging weight and momentum of a 22" machete. That means more whack out of a smaller blade. Will I choose that over a 18" machete in the jungle, no. Will I choose that over a 18" machete around the standard GA mountain region, quite possibly. It is definitely less cumbersome, even if it does weigh a little more. I know that Jeff says, and many others agree, that the machete is usually much more useful, when used correctly, than any big chopper. I do think that is true for some regions to an extent, but I also see the value of having less space taken up with long machete inertia behind it. I think the 10 has it's place. I can certainly think of several places and times where I would have rather just had a great big chopper than a machete and vice versa.

Edit: I say all this now. In a month I might feel completely different.

My point is there is no way to compare this prototype knife with anything except in a general sense. It may be a real POS as a bush knife compared to the RC-6.

Being no one here Except Jeff / Mike & Shon has touched the Elusive RC10 ?
I still lean towards my RC6 it is my Favorite of all the RAT's . The RC6 can do almost anything asked of it effectively with no timeline set on the RC10 ? why wait when you could be enjoying the RC6 Today !!

I have a scrapyard dogfather. It processes wood like crazy. But try carrying that on your belt hiking locally. You will generate lots of interest. A smaller blade for me works great on my belt.

I swear if there was an award for the most self deprecating company you guys would win hands down. :p

Here's how I'm looking at it.

You guys made the knife pretty much to the exact specs I asked for. The specs I requested were extremely close to the RTAKII. I tested all of the giant blades I could get my hands on such as the RD9, BK9, RTAKII, Busse FBM, etc. That's how I came up with what I wanted out of the RC10. Now as long as that's the case, I can imagine how that blade will perform.

Granted, like you said, things are going to be slightly different on the production model so it may vary slightly from what I know that blade can do, but I still know that it will be more ideal fo what I want than the RC6. That's just me though.

Before you guys designed this knife, I ordered a piece of 3/16" x 2.25" x 36" steel and designed my ideal chopper. Coincidentally, it looks almost identical to the RC10, so much so that if I decide to make a chopper to sell in the future, I'll have to redesign it so that no one says I ripped off RAT Cutlery. lol. That's a good indicator for me as to how this knife will perform. So that's how I came to my conclusion.

Just didn't want you to think I was pulling an opinion out of my ass based on pictures and drool level alone. It was only half based on that. ;)

I disagree. We're just a company based on Individualism and one that recognizes this industry to be chock full of BS! Besides, this whole knife industry is SUBJECTIVE so what may be a good bush knife for one may not be for the other, and how is anyone going to know that until they use it?

We don't set out to cut our own throat but we do apply common sense a little more than most other companies. All we ask of people is to not believe in the hype or thoughts of others and to try something for thmesleves before judging. If it's a POS then we will not have a problem listening to that as long as someone can tell us why it's a POS. What I REALLY have a problem with is someone who has a belief about something because someone else said it, instead of trying it for themselves.

BTW: I think we're going to put a banner up at our booth at SHOT that reads. A PROUD MEMBER OF THE CUTLERY INDUSTRY - SELLING BULLSHIT SINCE...."

LOL! Hell yeah! That's great. Get a picture of that with big smiles.

Dude, this feels a lot different than the RTAK II. You have to hold it for a while to realize that. It would be closer to other 10" blades than the RTAK. Shon and I were talking about that yesterday.

Sooooooo, you want to send it to me for an objective review? :D

Edit: Seriously.

Good. I always felt the RTAKs felt a bit "clunky". I much prefer the balance and feel of the old Ontario Survival Bowie. Not that it actually works any better. It just feels better to me.

I like the rtak ii, but it is large and heavy. Any comments on the rc ten can't be on the blade itself, but what I know of knives in general that are that size, grind, and weight. It's also probably due to the general excitment about the knife that generates so much chatter on it.

Something I really respect is how you clearly state the exact purpose of the knife. Not alot of companies would say "look this is cool, but you probably don't need it". If more places were that responsible itd be awesome.
