I need a knife for military purpose and situations that may occur within service.

My requirements:
Ok, the knife I need does NOT have to be maid of stainless steel. I more appreciate if they are not brittle. I would like a thicker blade with little weight in it...Out there in the field you will not play with food trying to slice it so it looks beautiful, but cut it in pieces that you can put in the mouth.
Good penetration ability through clothing, skin, muscles and ribs without fear of breaking the blade. Good cutting ability through skin, muscles and possible thin clothing and wires. It will keep the edge good and without chipping. Absolut NO serrations along the edge. Serrations on the top can I live with, but not a must. Good grip on the handle, don't want it to rotate in the hand or to slip with my hand along the edge when pushing the blade through something.
I always think of screwdriver...it's much easier to handle one with thicker handle.
Does this knife fulfill my requirements? Anyone who has expirience with it (within military)?

My appologies if I have been too straightforward when describing what the knife might be used for...You never know what kind of situation you may get in and I want to be able to rely on that knife.

I also have a question about 1095 carbon steel. What is its preferences? Are blades made of it brittle, does it keep edge well, edge chipping...And other things you know about it...

Thanks,

Others here can tell you more than I can. I can tell you 1095 will not chip on my past RAT blades, you just have to use a leather strop or hone steel to straighten the edge, then go right back to chopping, slicing, dicing, etc. 1095 is not known to be brittle like D2, for example. 1095 on an RC is easy to resharpen, especially in the field. That's what makes it so popular, even in the military. Others here can elaborate more.

Thanks for your input, but it seems like nobody here can give me a concrete answer to my qestion.:(
I thought a moderator or a expirienced RAT-fan could elaborate more about my questions about RC-6, but so far...nothing...

You won't get a specific answer because the RC-6 isn't shipping yet.

The closest thing would be a RAT-7, which I have, and yes, it will fit your mission profile to a T, in fact, I think a lot of RAT-7s were purchased by military personnel for exactly what you are talking about.

If the RC-6 follows the p[attern of the other RC knoves, it will be a much better fit & finish and far better sheath system versus the RAT-7, which in itself isn't a bad option.

Well, for one thing the RC-6 has not been released yet. I'm sure you won't be disappointed though with it's performance, though. I use the RTAK II in 1095 and fall small trees regularly with it. Including hickory. I repeat, hickory. Now that should just about cover flesh and bone and clothing. I just hone steel it to put it back in operation if the edge needs touching up. It has never chipped. Maybe that can tell you something about the durability of 1095. I wouldn't dream of trying that with D2. Just can't wait until RC comes out with an RTAK. My RC-3 and RC-4 in 1095 perform excellently. All RCs have excellent no-slip micarta scales for grips.

I am in the Army and I will tell you that the RC product line is perfect for the field. One thing.... why no serrations? I carry a RC3 on my IBA with serrations and let me tell you.... one seat belt mishap or when cutting rope you will wish you had it. The RC3 is perfect for a small blade. I also carry a Busse for my larger personal defense blade. I prefer to have something with a little more ass behind it when someone decides to get a little too close.

I don't like serrations along the edge. On the top it's fine...It's a taste thing...I imagine they get in the way when cutting, they may get stuck in oponents clothing...No, I prefer a "clean" edge. At first i was interested in CRK Pacific http://www.chrisreeve.com/pacific.htm , but since they refused to leave off serrations I moved on...I wanted freedom of choice and now I'm here...

I'll get a serrated folder too, just as backup/complement to my fixed blade.
One of knives i'm interested in is Busse Satin Jack (or upcomming Jack Hammer). Both of them are 6" as RC6...Btw, which Busse do you have?

I have a bunch of Busses!! I have both the Busses that you are looking at and the Jackhammer is by far the most tactical blade between the two. The SJ is a great blade as well. It is balanced and cuts like a dream. For what you are looking for the JH is the better choice. RC3 is a great blade to have on you as well. I love the fit and finish as well as the durability..... you can't beat a rat!

I've seen one more RAT-monster...:D "Something" called RC-5 SERE.

One more thing...I wrote that JackHammer was 6" Is that correct? I'm not sure, I assumed that because i read somewhere that JH is actually a variation of Satin Jack which is 6"...

It is a variation of the SJ. Here is a side by side. The top is the SJ and the bottom is the JH

The RC-5 SERE looks to be incredible!! I can't wait until that guy comes out!!

Btw, I was told that SERE 5 comes out in August (unconfirmed intel).

The world on the street is Aug on the SERE 5. I am going to the tactical week in Aug and hope to get the word from them on its release.
