I'm making a dive knife for my father, I need an idea on how hard the steel should be for a good dive knife?
I'm guessing I don't want it very hard if he's going to be using it to dig up materials from the ocean floor and cutting the odd line he comes into...but then again I could be completely wrong.

any ideas/input welcome :)

Not yet an expert, but toughness is what is important here.
The hardness will depend on what steel you use.

55 is tops,a bit lower if he is a salvage diver.Dive knives are utility tools and must be a pry bar, chisel, hammer, and knife.Toughness and break resistance are the prime blade features.ATS-34 ,154CM,or 440 should work fine.If you want to spend a little extra $ use CPM S60-V.It has 17.0 % chromium , 5.5 % vanadium, 0.4 % molybdium, and 2.15 % carbon. It makes a tough blade.Admiral steel has it.Black canvas micarta. Heavy, flat pommel.Sturdy oval guard. Mike Nelson would be proud to own it (half of you guys have no idea what that means).

do you think that a guard would be essential?
I was going more for a full-tang idea, micarta slabs figured to fit his hands, so it wouldn't have a pommel or a guard.
I can see why you would need it now that I think about it....
I'll have to shoot some ideas by him and see what he wants.
oh and I'm using 440c being the only steel I have atm

A heavy, flat pommel (butt cap) is a must on a working dive knife.Guard only needs to stick out 1/4 inch, but I wouldn't want a dive knife without one of some sort.440 is fine for this knife.
