I was told that the Benchmade M-2 blades were 60-61. Ernest Mayer told me that the A-2 blades he makes for me are around 60 also. Somewhere, I heard that Mission tempers their A-2 blades to around 58 or so, but they are going for maximum toughness. Can't help you with EDI.
Then why do all these knife companies brag about how tough their tool steels are if they aren't any harder than cpm-440v or any other good stainless? How could they have any better edge retention?
Hardness just indicates how difficult it is to compress the material. You can't easily do cross comparisons on strength and toughness of different steels using RC alone. As for edge retention, there is more to it than high hardness, strength, toughness and wear resistance are also factors.
