Im thinking about getting an RC3 with a leather sheath for my Dad. How are the leather sheaths? They any good? Anyone have any pictures of themselves carrying it on there belt?

Thanks guys

I don't have any pictures, but got a leather sheath from knivesshipfree for my RC-3 a couple months ago. It works pretty well, but I'm not completely a fan of the snap retention. I would prefer a pocket sheath, but this one works well enough. It is built pretty well and holds the knife securely.

I prefer synthetic with a high carbon blade to help prevent rust. Leather definitely wins the aesthetic contest in my book though. no pics sorry. Great present!

The leather sheaths from KSF are awesome. I don't have one for the RC-3 but I've got one for my RC-4. They are made with a process called EEP and they won't rot or rust your blade. The snap is pretty clever in that while unsnapped you can simply flip it behind a slot in the belt loop to keep it out of the way of the knife edge. It works great. I highly recommend these sheaths.

Yep. that does look nice. I might have to pick one up for my new rc 4 which is on the way!

Does the firesteel come with the sheath cause on the site its pictures with it?

No the sheath does not come with a firesteel. It will hold the larger LMF firesteels and the the Bark River Custom Firesteels. The one pictured is a Barkie Custom in Matte Black Canvas (i think) Micarta. It matches up nice with the standard ESEE handles.

smcclown05,
Did your sheath come with a fair about of protectant in it? When you sheath your rc-3 does the protectant/oil that came on the sheath do any damage to the micarta? Or does it just darken it?

TIA

It just darkens it. If you don't like the darkening...it will lessen quickly and it comes off with soap and water. :)

Yup, Derrick is right. The leather is processed with the protectant all through it so you don't have to worry about treating it with anything. In warm weather some might come to the surface and can get on the micarta or canvas handles. It will darken it but a little warm water and dish soap and the handles look as good as new. No damage.

I own the RC3 leather KSF sheath, and it's very high quality. You can even have it hang down into your front pocket if you want it to be concealed (maybe back pocket also, but it would be harder to re-sheath behind you).

Thank you both for the information.

Do you remove the handles when you wash them?

smcclown05,
Sorry to get off topic, but does your RC-4 have a convex edge? If so, how do you like it compared to the regular edge both in application and maintenance? Looks nice.

I don't. I just take the whole thing to the kitchen sink, lather it up, rinse it off and towel dry.

Thanks! BTW, I ordered my RC-3 w/ Leather sheath from you and they are great and arrived very fast!

I also love the points program on your site. Thank you.

Nope there is no need to remove the handles. I just wash the whole thing off, towel dry, and put a little mineral oil on the edge and logo, just like Derrick said.

LW, The RC-4 in the pic does indeed have a full convex grind from Bark River. I love it. But I also like the normal beveled edges on the rest of my ESEE knives. I recently ordered a new RC-4 so I could compare the two but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Both can get very sharp but overall I think I prefer the covex edge. The convex vs. beveled edge is an ongoing debate but I would say just try both and see what works best for you.
