RC3 on the AT

Just recently finished backpacking 62 miles on the AT in NC/TN. The RC3 was my knife of choice. No tall tales or great exploits. The RC3 pulled typical backpacking duties...clearing tent sites of saplings and low hanging branches, opening meals, etc. I can report I hiked in a lot of rain, with no ill effects to the RC3 (for those concerned with rust and knife care in the field).

After just over 1 year of service, the RC3 is still going strong.

A typical day with break in the rain/clouds.

No joke, I was just sitting down wondering which model to buy for backpacking. I have an RC-5, but that's not what you call a lightweight knife : ). I think your description of the RC-3 was just what I needed. I'll still get an RC-4 though ... for ... um ... Sundays. Great post and pics.

The pack is a Kifaru Zulu (G1...generation 1). Incidentally, Kifaru G1 packs are on closeout due to the G2s replacing them. So if there is interest, now is the time to act.

I got the RC3 before the RC4 was available. If I had to choose now, it would be a tough choice. The RC4 would probably get the nod due to providing some extra performance due to length without adding much in size and bulk.

That said, the RC3 was a "big" knife compared to what AT thru hikers and light weight bacpackers are carrying. But then I was the one asked if I could cut back saplings, etc. to clear some tent sites. The light weight folders everyone had were not up for the task. IMO, an RC3 or 4 is a good choice for backpacking carry.

Great feedback. I do hope to acquire both the RC-3 and RC-4 and mix and match on various outings. I appreciate the advice.

You should be very, very nice to your girlfriend anyway. If you're lucky, you might even get lucky! ;)

That's just TexasTonys butt, too much talcum powder this morning.

In his defense, the weatherman did call for a hot one today.:D

What ever you do dont ever use the medicated powder any where near any sensitive area's. WOWZERS only once will one make that mistake, trust me.:o
