RC3 vs Bark River STS-3

I have a few RC3s, and they serve me really well.

But having been bitten by the Knifus adictus bug while on vacation to the Amazon jungle, I need to buy more knives --- else I might die from the disease.:D

So, I'm considering an STS 3. How does it compare to the RC 3?

Thanks for your comments.

You got my curiosity going so I did some You Tube research and found this video by virtuovice.

I trust his opinion.
He is VERY knowledgeable and has a lot of knives.

I had an STS3 for a bit. I really liked the handles, fit my hand perfectly, although an extra .5" woulda been nice... The full convex was stupid sharp. That said.. for my money (since it's not a cheap knife).. I'd rather have a HRLM or RMD... I like CPM154, but.. I've come to love carbon blades so much more... and the handles are just as good- my camp knife is a convexed RMD.. wouldn't trade it for the world.

Thanks stjones for the very informative video --- that's a great review. I think I might still try an STS-3. I do a lot of chopping, and the reviewer noticed the same I did about the RC-3: specifically, that, although a great knife, it doesn't excel at that task.

myowngod: please pardon my ignorance, but what is HRLM and RMD?

IIRC, that's a Howling Rat something something, and RanManDu from Swamp Rat knives.

typical of the whole Bussekin lineup, they don't list many, if any products on their website... you need a secret decoder ring or something to buy one from the factory.

Boy that sheath is tight! I agree with the gentleman in the video. Its VERY dangerous for your left hand.

Ill stick with my 3.

Is that the factory sheath on the STS-3 or aftermarket? I didn't watch the whole video but that sheath is useless, IMO.

We hardly ever lower-rate someone else's product but that sheath is an accident waiting to happen. They at least need a thumb push on the sheath to make it safer. Knife is really nice though!

Yep, luckily he knew what he was doing. Just the other day, as i was cleaning blood of the floor, i kept thinking that i hope next time i say, dude, dont do that, they will listen. I dont know why, but for some reason almost everybody i know pules the knife out like its some sort of japanese sword hiding inside izula sheath. Weird shit.

We saw the Cold Steel rep at Smoky Mountain KnifeWorks this weekend stab himself pretty bad doing basically the same thing.

I also saw a commandante of the Peruvian Air Force nearly cut a finger all the way off unsheathing one of our large knives this way.

Never, ever try to unsheath a knife by applying equal force to both the sheath and the knife with two hands then trying to pull apart.

Another potential problem with that STS sheath is that if you DO use your thumb to "open" the kydex up a bit, its likely to get pinched (really hard) in the kydex as the knife comes out.

Im glad my RC-4 sheath is not like that. I cant believe how tight they made that sheath.

?

In my humble opinion, either knife is WAY too small for chopping of any sort. I would personally not make chopping effectiveness of a short blade like that a criteria to choose one over the other.

I have an RC-3 and I have been really happy with it.

With reguards to the Bark River Kydex sheath, I have a Bravo 1 that has a similar problem. I quickly put the kydex sheath in a drawer and bought a good quality Loveless pouch style leather sheath. Bark River makes good knives, but I do not like their kydex sheaths at all.

Ratmandu
Howling Rat Little Mischief

Both readily avail from the swamp rat store (no decoder ring needed) and very nice knives. I love my ESEE's but if you want to try something to compliment your RC3, they are def. worth looking into.

After loosing my RC-3 a couple of months ago, I decided to replace it with a STS-3. The STS-3 is a very competent knife and the two are very comparable. In practical work, the differences in the handle are negligible, and both can be used well for long periods of time, but the RC-3 seemed to provide a better grip when wet (I'm working from memory, I don't have both knives to compare side by side). I like the thicker blade on the STS-3 and didn't find it to be a disadvantage relatively to the thinner RC-3 blade as far as normal camping and bushcrafting tasks go. The tip of the STS-3 also seems to be a better driller. But all the above differences are really very small. The only significant difference is the steel: for my applications the stainless offers significant advantages, because most of my trips involve rivers and very wet environments. I found that chopping and light batoning was not a problem with the 154CM. The edge remains sharper longer, too.

I agree with the comments about how poor the kydex sheeth is. I replaced it with an aftermarket leather sheeth.

The bottom line is that I found both knives to be very similar, and that in practice the type of steel is the main distinguishing characteristic. The STS-3 is a more expensive knife, too, and I imagine that for many applications it will be worth the difference in price. For me, after having spent the extra cash in the new sheath, I must say that the price difference wasn't worth it, even if I like the STS-3 a little bit better overall.

Was it the 5? Cause I saw a co worker of mine who I suggested get your 5 after breaking two walmart specials, of a gerber knife.

The tensioner on it? He over tightened it and was trying to pull it apart, fiercely, he then pulled and it yanked out, it flew out of his hand into the office wall....no joke too. That is serious stupidity. I was trying to tell him not to do that either....ugh...I hope he loses the knife or something backpacking, cause that kind of stupidity drives me nuts :\ now I feel bad for suggesting your knife... :(
