So I already have an edc folder and my RC4 was mounted on my body armor but since we dont wear that all the time here I had to figure out a way to have it with me but would not get in the way so I thought this was pretty cool and I thought I should share it with you guys. I have had a couple people come and check it out in the chow hall and px and they thought it was the coolest thing.

That's great setup!!! It's always a difficult thing trying to find a good place to carry a blade without body armor on. I always liked to use a drop leg mount on my off side (left leg) and mounted it there, since my right leg was carring my 9mm. I've never seen that before, again, great idea!

Pretty cool. I suppose you don't shoot offhand a lot though. If that doesn't turn out to be exactly what you wanted you might want to look at "boot knife"/calf carry set up.

Thats a cool set up I think my seargent might have something to say about that though. And I shot a few days ago with my knife mounted there, Since i put the cco on i can get away without having a great cheek to stalk weld so everything worked out pretty well

I tried the boot knife carry with a Kabar when I was in and it caught on everything.

Not crazy on the rifle mount but if it works for you. . .
Stay safe,

I had the idea to do this a few months ago but i was very concerned if i was going to be able to still shoot and operate my weapon effectively and I have knocked out several training events with the knife mounted on my weapon like how it is now and it has not interfered with my shooting or movement. Just to clear this up

Points for ingenuity, melch79 - but my one misgiving would be this: what happens should god forbid you ever lose your weapon? With the RAT mounted on the rifle, you've just lost your backup as well.

Good god, this is gonna be a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway - with you modern combat soldiers, is ALL your personal gear designed to be carried on your body armor/vests? Is there a way to carry the RAT in a "cross draw" style, on a belt, when you're NOT wearing the body armor? Remember to be kind in your response, as in my day we carried the old school ALICE gear. lol You guys with your fancy MOLLE systems, vests, and water-bladders would've looked like something out of "Star Wars" to us old Cold War-era farts. ha ha

Ok yes and no I could fashion up some cross draw way to mount my RC4 on my belt but I already carry a gerber multitool and a crkt folder on my belt, I am not really into the whole batman utility belt thing as my belt is quickly becoming but those are mission critical items as far as i am concerned. I do like having my Rat with me but being completly honest it could stay mounted on my vest ( i just hate for it to go to waste there though) I think i use both of those items at least a half dozen times a day. As far as loosing my weapon goes, If a weapon gets lost there is a post wide shutdown, no one in or out and all the way up my chain of command and my NCO support channel would get ripped up by either post commander or the local command sergeant major. Not only that but i would have to pay for it and i would probably get some UCMJ action. All that being said we are in a war zone so everywhere that I go my weapon has to go; chow, latrine, mwr, and work. So i really dont even want to think about what would happen if i lost my weapon. Some cool news this morning i woke up to a mortar blast, it was like 250m away but still it rocked my chu and sent up a big cloud of dust, I was really hoping to be able to use my weapon.

Roger that on losing your weapon - I slept with mine on field exercises and I never saw combat during my time in.

That said, strange and unexpected things seem to happen in war zones all the time, and you know the saying about "the best-laid plans...". Guys fall out of vehicles (IIRC, didn't a soldier fall out the back of a Chinook during a firefight in the early weeks of the war over there?), aircraft go down, soldiers get separated from their buddies, etc. Worst-case scenarios and rarities, for sure, but weird things happen, and I'd hate to think about losing two important pieces of equipment in one fell swoop should the worst occur. Really just thinking-out-loud here, I guess.

On a related note - another good buddy of mine is a contractor over there, and has worked in-country for about 5 years or so. He's a supply guy - basically doing the same job he did when he was an enlisted man, but now he works with the Afghan Army, training his counterparts in logistics/supply issues. He's also one of these guys who loves to travel during his downtime, and he keeps a great 'blog about his travels and experiences in Afghanistan specifically and SE Asia in-general. He's pretty good about trying to learn local languages and cultural, so he meets loads of interesting people along the way. Check it out, and feel free to comment - just be warned, he's a bigtime UK Wildcat fan, so you might have to pick through some sports-related comments, too.

Again, take care of yourself.

Hilarious. We joke all the time about how "the Big Blue Mist is taking over the world". I guess it's true.

You've got to show him this picture and the 'blog - he'll really dig it.
