Hi here is the deal I'm thinking of replacing my well used and worn Gerber LMF II. I was thinking of a RAT RC4, I already have an Izula and a RC6, I love them both those are just great.

Anyone have both RC4 and Gerber LMFII to view size comparison in length and width with and without sheaths.

Anyone have used both to give me an objective comparison.

Thaks in advance.

I have had both. I think the gerber would be good in my tool box in my truck and the RC4 for everything else.

Here's some shots.

I like the Gerber LMF II, it's my emergency bag knife. The biggest drawback is the sheath, as you virtually need two hands to draw the knife from it unless you use the thigh strap, which looks a tad mall ninja in a normal campsite! :D

The RAT RC-4 is hands down the more overall usable knife IMO!

I'm amazed the RC4 looks really small next to the LMF. I'm beginning to wonder why not investigate on the RC5 but I prefer single grind rather than saber grind, anyone have good opinions on how to best replace an LMF II with a RAT knife ???

Here's a comparison shot of the RC-5 & LMF.

The RC-5 is much more substantial.

You know what, I actually think the current RC-6 I have will be the defenitive replacement for my LMFII, I'll buy an RC-4 but as a small blade, not to replace my LMFII. The current Flight Bag I have holds the RC-6 perfect so thats good, I'll just place a smaller task RC4 in there.

The problem I have with the RC5, is the Saber grind, I really don't like that compared with a full grind.

Thats It, Thanks for the postings guys,

The Gerber is going to be tougher than the RC-4, so it depends on your uses. Last ditch survival knife? Stick with the Gerber.

I just got my RC-5 today... and I am impressed. I got the LMFII as a Father's Day gift last year - I've had a KaBar (The one shown is new.), sadly, since LBJ took office. I've had Bucks for years, but the 650 Nighthawk was added last year - and remains the cheapest of the one's shown. It's worked it's magic on a few limbs - and some fuzz-making. The KaBar was next, price-wise, then the heavily discounted Gerber (My son got a deal!), and finally the RC-5.

To be honest, my limited use for a camping/bushcraft knife over the last two years was more than satisfied by one of my Bark Rivers. Many years ago, as a young man, my Dad's old WWII KaBar sufficed for my camping, etc, needs. I have used the Gerber on a few bushes - even the serrated part (I don't buy serrated knives... it was a gift.) in the last year. My next camping trip will see the RC-5 accompany me. It feels good in the hand, has heft, and instills 'confidence' - time will tell. I like basic leather sheaths - really stripped the Gerber's sheath to use it - I may try the RC-5 'as delivered'.
