If you could only have one, what'd it be? I'm trying to decide myself. I'm leaning more toward the 6 because of the ffg being more useful in food prep and all around utility. although the 5 sure does look beefy I wonder how much stronger the 5 is than the 6? I have to give the 5's sheath a nod as well. Do those of you with both think that the 6 is just as proficient in chopping abilities, battoning, ect? thanks

I pick the 6 over the 5.
The flat grind makes for a better slicer, and I don't think you'll find a whole lot of activities that a 6 isn't "beefy" enough for.
If you like the 5's sheath, you can get a Spec Ops Survival Sheath for the RC6.

Neither one is a chopper. Both should baton well, and I give the 6 the nod here as well, a little extra length never hurts when batoning.

I have to agree with Corp on this one. I will probably order a spec ops sheath for my RC6 soon, and kit it up like I have done with my RC5.

For chopping duty I carry a chopper either my M-43 kukri, a tomahawk or a hatchet.

The RC-5 is a bit shorter, and a 1/4" thick. It's designed as a survival knife where strength counts for a lot.

I'd pick the RC-6 to start with, but the RC-5 does look nice.

I have both but have to admit I have not had the chance to use either one yet. I like that the RC6 is a bit longer and feel it would just slightly better at battoning and the amount of abuse that these RATs can take the RC5 is a bit overkill on thickness.

The Sheath on the RC5 is pretty awesome but like the good Cpl pointed out you can pick up a similar one from Spec Ops, the "Combat Master". I prefer the discontinued Spec Ops "Survival Sheath" as it's closer looking to the sheath made for the RC5 by Eagle but they are getting harder to find, I'm still waiting on mine that I ordered for another company.

Either way you really can't go wrong between the RC5 and RC6 but if I had to choose only one I would take the RC-6 and find a Spec Ops Survival Sheath as I'm not 100% sold on Kydex yet.

Hmm thats interesting I guess I prefer a little less blade then all of you. I love my RC-5. I havent found a task it isnt good at!

Survival sheaths can be had HERE Go to the menu on the right and scroll to the bottom.

Got mine in 4 days after ordering.

Oh, and although I prefer canvas micarta, those mint green liners on the RC-6 are really good looking.

I agree with everyone else. I love my RC-5 and if it were my only blade, I would be totally ok but between the 2, I'd prefer the RC-6.

My Dear Friends,

Informative thread. :D

In fact, it seems to have confirmed my suspicions. I have been considering an RC-5 but have been waffling, asking myself if it has any significant advantage over the RAT-3, RC-4 and RC-6 that I already own.

FWIW, I will not be digging with my knives. I will not be batoning except under the most extreme emergencies - I have other tools designed for such things and consider it abusive of a knife to beat on it. Yes, I know the RAT knives can take it, but I still defer to the adage that "a knife is the least effective and most expensive prybar that you will ever own."

Of the three, I am leaning heavily toward the RC-4 as my favorite - it seems to possess the best combination of strength, weight, and size. The RC-6 will probably be more of a dedicated camping blade and the RAT-3 an EDC always-on-my-person blade.

Incidentally, this doesn't mean that I won't get an RC-5, just that it isn't a "I have to have it right now" kind of priority.

Speaking of which...well, never mind. ;) Rather than hijack this excellent thread I'll start another.

I prefer the RC6 over the 5 just due to weight only.... but then again I love the RC6 ,it stays strapped to my Pygmy falcon II .
