I'm looking for a a 6-7 inch camp knife mostly for chores around camp such as batoning and maybe limbing, so far my only other fixed blades are 4-5 inches So I wanted one that would be easier to baton with.
Here's what I know about each so far...

RC 6
- Great Warranty
- Great Quality
- Easy To Sharpen
- 6.5 in flat grind blade 3/16" thick
- 1095 steel

Woodlander
- Probably great quality(hard to find any reviews/comparisons, but it's spyderco)
- 6 3/32 in blade (though I may possibly be tempted to go to the 7.5in Forager)
- almost full flat grind with convex edge 3/16" thick
- N960Co steel
- Being discontinued

So What do you think Gents? anybody have experience with both? Or even experience with the spyderco and an rc-4 or other rat product? Your comments are very much appreciated.

Howdy,

I would go with the Rat Cutlery RC-6. This is based on my experience with the RC-4 and Izula.

Unbeatable warrentee, high quality, great 1095 carbon steel blade with a full tang, and good price.

I think Rat Cutlery knife have one of the highest cost per benifit ratio out there - IE you get a lot of knife for the money!

I had the Spyderco Woodlander. I have not owned the newer RC6, but I have owned several different RAT knives (3, 5, 7, & the 10" blade model).

The Woodlander is a well made, good looking knife, no doubt about that & the steel (N690C) is very good & is SS.

However, I am partial to good ole carbon steel & I like the "flatter" spine on the RC6 (I do have a Ranger Knive RD6-a custom, not an Ontario made one).

I felt the Woodlander, while comfortable, just felt "bulky" & I'm not sure the spear point blade would be as useful as the blade on the RC.

Of course, these are just my opions, but I think you'll find most will prefer the RC6 (Or a similar carbon steel knife).

Look luck with whatever you get.

I've got lots of RAT knives including the RC-6. They are all tough as nails and take a great edge. I don't have any experience with the Spyderco but my vote goes to the RC-6. It's big enough for just about any camp chore, tough enough to beat the snot out of, and thin enough to still be a good slicer. One other plus is that relative to many other hefty blades, like the awesome Ranger RD series, it is pretty light in the hand and useful for all kinds of stuff, not just bashing through logs :)

I don't have the Spyderco and although it appears to be capable enough, I sure do like my 1095 steel in a blade this size. The RC-6 is a super nice knife, comfortable in hand, and well balanced. Not going to be much of a chopper due to its light weight, but for baton work and general camp chores-you bet.

Another vote for the RC-6, it will be a great camp knife.
