Wow! I cannot believe that someone would post on our forum specifically and be that ignorant. I can understand that someone may not be that awed as most of us spyderco groupies, however, I've got to say I've never seen any knife that looks, acts, and has the performance of the Spyderco Dodo other than another spyderco. I've not sampled a lot of different knife companies like most here have done. But I have to say the old saying holds true...'You can please some of the people all the time, and all the people some of the time, but you cannot please all the people all the time.' Sal, I have to say you and those who work with you definitely have done well or you would not be the company you are today (not like you do not know this already). I think Sal's work and those who share in that work speaks for itself in reputation. Well, I think thats enough for now. I would be interested if he actually posted on the general forum here and the responses to his comments from other people who may or may not like spyderco but prefer other companies over our beloved one. I'm sure the general concensus would be similiar to my thoughts on the issue.

I don't necessarily mind a post like this; I think it's good to mix it up every once in a while -- the critics & the advocates. It allows both sides to think critically about the issue, and maybe educate some.

Maybe brownshoe is just currently "knifed out" -- that issue has been addressed before in the forums. Maybe this is his way of getting some feedback from other knife hobbyists to re-kindle his own interest.

I think his choice to post to the Spyderco forum was good -- he can get responses directly from the people (like you & me) who rather enjoy Spyderco's offerings.

It's a forum...for discussion...right.

Everyone's opinion is welcome and open for discussion.

Sal is 100% dead on on this.

A forum provides for open discussion and interchange of ideas. It is also a source of valuable feedback for Spyderco. Sal has responded more than once to criticisms of Spyderco and refined the line based on feedback recieved here and on the Spydie home forum. That Sal sits in and responds thus is a credit to him and Spyderco's integrity and it shows a keen desire to improve the breed. Although I may not agree with Brownshoe, I heartily commend him for bringing his view here to the lion's den and trust that we would all continue to comment civilly. He is still, and after all this, a Spyderco fan. No harm done.....

well...the guy give his opinion...that is his right to say what he think. Fortunately this is the fundament of a Democraty.
But all of us who like Spyderco just won't care about this kind of opinion... Personnaly I like Spyderco's products, and when a new catalog arrive what I look after is not if there is something new, but more "is there something I like and I don't have it yet?".
I've seen trough the years at every year Spyderco allways come with some improvment of some kind, maybee not a new model, but maybee a new and better steel, new locking system etc... I've never seen Spyderco make a step back with quality unless other knives compagnies. For me that is enough to put my trust in their products.
Now every comment can be see in a constructive way, or be forgotten.;)

I have to agree that this is a discussion forum...I thought personally that would have been a better post for the general forum here as well as a little more knife education on his part. Its seems to me he was not as knowledgeable about the statements he was making about spyderco...that was what I had a problem with overall. I do completely agree though that it helps to find out what the ELU wants and needs and what they feel is lacking in general. Yes, Sal needs to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly which he definitely has the competency to reply to those statements. My thoughts of this forum has always been either support or educated discussion not something that seems to just spout false statements. However, I think Sal can educate him easily enough...well next time I will hold my fingers back...but I ask shouldn't I be allowed a response to his comments if as you say this is a forum for discussion? Thats all I wanted to say in response to his statements. Anyhow, I think I'll stay away from this type of discussion in the future.*shrug*

I think that Spyderco forumites tend to be pretty loyal to the brand. Why else would so many people rise to the defense of the new line of knives. It almost sounds like the old Ford vs Chevy discussions, or Mac vs. PC. It is unique to find so many loyal followers in any consumer product field, much less knives.
Oh, discussion is o.k. We don't have to agree with it, we don't have to like what is said, or how it came across. It is important that we respect free discussion in the forums as long as it isn't mean spirited or derogatory. Just my 2.5 cents worth.

Hi Kudzu, no problem on my end and no reason to "hold fingers back". 'tis another opinion, right?

Socrates was one of my "mentors" and I'll always opt for the open dialectic.

Certainly many will disagree with much that I may have to say and I too have been known to be "opinionated". It is the "open forum" that shares the thoughts. Actually I'm impressed with the civility displayed by the Spyderco forum visitors, even in controversy.

We're all teachers and we're all students.
