Hey guys, hows it going? I wanted to ask if anyone has done any batoning with a recurve blade? I know that a recurve is supposedly better for chopping and slicing, but I haven't heard much regarding batoning through wood. I dont know if this makes sense, but it seems to me that a recurve could cause some problems in the batoning area if the blade isnt parallel with the grain of the wood; thus leading to blade edge problems. I know that might sound confusing, but regardless if anyone has any feedback regarding my question I would really appreciate it. I want to break in my Scrap Yard Yard Hook, but before I baton the hell out of some logs I want to make sure. Thanks for any help!

just curious why you would use a fixed blade for cutting instead of carrying an axe or some other similar implement?

There are a huge number of fixed blades that are more then strong enough for batoning. Many seem to be designed for it. They may not always work as well as an ax but many here feel that a larger fixed blade being less cumbersome to carry makes it worth it, that being said many disagree. In any case that wasn’t the question asked in the OP.

I’ve never used a blade with a recurve to baton, but have wondered how they would perform.

I've batoned folders before, (sometimes you aren't planning on camping).

I never noticed difficulties batoning with my recurve Outcast. I'll try to pay more attention next time, though.

I like the idea of using one tool for any purpose. Whenever I hike, or go on surfing trips I always take a knife with me. You NEVER know when you might need one! In the meantime, I just practice all sorts of bushcraft such as chopping, batoning, fire making, shelter making, and other activities.
I know I will probably never have to face a survival situation, but if I were to be tossed into the elements with only my knife, I want to know I would be able to hack it. I guess its like carrying a condom in the wallet; I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it! I guess I will try batoning with the Yard Hook. If anyone else has any incite I would really appreciate it! Thanks for the help thus far though guys...

You shouldent have a problem, however batoning is a camping skill that most likely wont be needed in a survival situation, and a real survival knife is much too valuable to be risked on camping chores. My survival knife dosent leave the sheath unless absolutely needed, and then only maybe.
