I recently bought a small Case sheath knife for $10. It's a pattern still being sold and the new ones sell for $49.00. I think it's call "Bird and Trout. In any event the leather washer handle is dark and needs some sprucing up. Before I do anything- is there a particular way to refinish a leather washer handle? Sand/scrap and varnish? Use super glue? something else? Thanks for any help.

If it isn't loose, just sand it lightly and coat it with boiled linseed oil.

If it is loose, take care of the looseness and sand it, then linseed oil.

Man,

No disrespect intended, but, you must be even older than I. That is the kind of advice being given when I was a kid. The linseed oli will soften the leather, not good. What you want is to seal the leather so that water and mildew cannot get into it. Super glue would work but would need to be renewed if the knife is used. Polyurethene , three coats, sanded between coats then polished is the very best, I know of. If the leather is tight and sound when you start then you can expect it to last a lifetime. Even in jungles.

i use superglue when i redo a leather washer handle. just sand it smooth and put on light coats of glue in small areas smoothing the glue out as you go. do 1/2" areas at a time and quickly. after the glue starts to set dont mess with it. after its all done and dry sand it then buff with 0000 steel wool until smooth. fill in any low spots with glue and buff again.

Well I'm a certified knife nut, you can never have to many knives! I buy em and I also make em. I use super glue on wood handles and I like the fiish so I think I'll try that on the leather- the reason I asked is I wasn't certain if the glue might adversely react with leather.

I just use natural beeswax. Soften it in my fingers and rub it into the leather. Then buff it a bit and you're done!
