Re-finish/Refurbish My First Large Sebenza

Dear CRK and CRK devotees,

I just received my first Sebenza, a Large Plain Sebenza which is used, has character marks, and a very slightly flattened tip. The hex sided screws look as though someone has reassembled the knife on a weekly basis for a year or two.

I would like to send the "tin man" to "Emerald City" for a complete refurbishing. A bead blasting of the handle slabs, new hex sided screws, a new righty thumbstud, a regrinding of the blade to correct the slightly flattened tip and dead spots on the edge, perhaps new phosphor bronze washers (if CRK thinks it needs them). My question is that does the $25 cover all that? Is the refurbishing service still available?

I invite any and all to post details. I'm off to email CRK knives now.

Not only will CRK sharpen them but they will completely refurbish one to like new condition for about $25. You can't beat it!

PsychRN,

I'm not sure I would have bought one that needed that much work.

I'm sure it would cost more than $25.

Your best bet is to E-mail CRK direct.

Hi RGRAY,

I bought a large plain which was a user for $175. If I spend $35 to bring it back to new or near new condition, I still think I got a good deal. I can get a brand new one for $300 from my truly local dealer, but most of the sebenzas that I see in the for sale forum are in $290 plus shipping range although in the past I did see $250 prices for users. I am beginning to see why there are so many fanatics or Sebenzanistas. I am at the point that I want a user that doesn't become a flavor of the month for me. My daily carry used to be a Mission MPF but its thumb studs are too sharp for small-of-the-back/IWB carry. I did get a reply from CRK as follows:

Thank you for your e-mail. We have in fact changed the pricing cost of refurbishing our Sebenza knives. This change did go into effect close to 2 years ago though.

The breakdown of cost on the things you need done is as follows:
1) Re-sandblast handles & pocket clip - $21.00
2) Screws will be replaced if needed and at no charge to you
3) Thumb lug will be either re-anodized if possible at no charge, if
we do need to replace it the cost will be $10.50 -- but we need
to see the thumb lug first to see what we can do.
4) Knife will be re-sharpened and lubed at no charge to you
5) Clip will be re-sandblasted with the handles so the cost falls in
the $21.00 price range for re-sandblasting the handles.

Bronze washers will be replaced at no charge - if you want extra sets of them then they run $1.00 per set. There is no cost for a new Allen Wrench.

You may ship the knife to us at your convenience to:
CRK
11624 W. President Drive, #B
Boise, ID 83713

At this time I am not sure exactly how much the cost will be to refurbish the knife until we receive your knife back from you. I would be more then happy to e-mail you the total amount due once we receive the knife back in from you.

Thank you and please let me know if you should have any other questions once
you receive this e-mail. ENDQUOTE

I am off to send my 'benza to Emerald City. I think those prices are indeed, fair to bring back this user to prissy condition. As this information is not in the current FAQ or on the CRK website, I think that this reprint is useful information.

$175

That's the lowest price I have ever heard for a large Sebenza.

I'm surprised the seller didn't send it back to make more money.

Even with $30 for shipping sounds like you got a great deal.

Let us know the final price when you get it back.

You won't be disappointed. :)

A buck and three quarters? No more entries, we have a winner. Unless you have a major problem with the lock bar you got a great deal.

I bought mine used from a forumite a year and a half ago for $175. But then by the time it got in and out of the CRK shop, plus shipping I was looking at around another $70...still $245 for a freshly refurbed Sebenza still is pretty great!

How about this one stjames... I got a small regular -- B.O.D. April 2001 with minor handle marks (nothing that wouldn't have happened with about a week of carry) for $200.

Don't mean to brag and it may not be better than PsychRN's deal, but just want to say the knife gods were smiling on me with that one.

When you get a good deal it helps to publicly praise the knife gods or else you may get burned on the next one.
