Is it possible for me to send my production Emerson Commander back to EKI to be re T-ed?
I am willing to pay a surcharge...but will they do it for me?

I have one word for you. DREMEL. My favorite tool

My understanding is that they will not redo finishes at EKI. The Black-T and Green-T finishes are sub contracted to "Walter Birdsong and Associates". They may be able to help you with refinishing it.

I'll see if I can dig up thier contact info.

Not trying to pick on EKI here, but Chris Reeve will competely refinish/refurbish his knives for a modest fee ... forever!

Sent Buck Knives a folder that cost $20 back when and got a basically new looking knife for not much $.

I really like the Wave, but ...

Good point, but . . .

CRK (and others) use an uncoated finish called "Stone Wash". Basically the blade is thrown into a big tub and vibrated with ceramic stones, scratching it in every possible direction. Very simple finish and easy to accomplish.

All they have to do to "refinish" your knife is disassemble, toss it in the tub, vibrate, rinse, re sharpen and re assemble.

The coated finishes used by EKI and others are done by subcontractors and are just a tad more complicated and expensive to accomplish.

Refinishing would require disassembly, Stripping the old coating, Shipping to the finisher, re coating process, re shipping the knife to EKI, re sharpening, re logoing, re assembly.

I would however like to see EKI offer a simplier finish like the Stonewashing.

John, what if I paid them a surcharge? Because I think if I sent the blade to walter birdsong, the EKI logo will no longer be there...

John, as often, you are absolutely correct. Keep in mind that for something like $20 Chris Reeve will "re-finish" his Kalguard coated One Piece Range knives. Granted the "disassembly" is simpler and there is no logo to re-do, but with his resharpening, cleaning up, tweeking and new Kalguard, you get a pretty much new knife for a very modest cost. Like I said, not picking on EKI and your points are well taken, but I am comparing opportunities for ELU with two different "premium" knife companies.

Nimrod

Point well taken. Two different companies, two different policies.

I know of more high end makers that will not refinsh knives, then I do ones that will.

Does anyone know what else, if anything EKI "subs out?" Does EKI make any of its own parts or do they just assemble the knives?

LOL

They sub out they same things every other maker, including CRK, does. Screws, pivots, ect.

Don't get me wrong, CRK makes a great knife, as long as you want a Sabenza. But they have not been without there detractors and the occasional lemon.

I've owned and carried Sebenzas and really like them.

I recently had a conversation in the chat room along these very lines. I would love to see Ti bodied, mono locked Emersons. How bad would a Ti bodied, mono locked Commander be? But there again we get into a "Catch 22". The same people that whine that Emersons aren't monolocks would whine that Emerson was copying CRK. Where does it end.

While we're talking about other manufactures. I was discussing Microtechs with a gentleman on another forum. He didn't care for their new Amphibians styling. "The blades got too much recurve, it needs more point, yadda, yadda" The jest was that he likes Microtech's LUDT design. The LUDT is a great knife, but not all knives need to be or should be LUDTs. If you want an LUDT, buy an LUDT.

If you want a Sebenza . . . .

Just a thought.

John, tell me how you did that with the link. Email if you would like.

I do have a large and a small Sebenza, wouldn't trade them for anything. Also have a Commander. Different knives for different things and situations.

I understand that small fasteners are purchased from companies that do that because who wants to tool up just to make their own screws. I was speaking more about the major components.

Nimrod, look here. That's called "URL Hyperlinking". There are also some other cool UBB codings there.

If you see something interesting in someones posts, you can also look to see how they did it by clicking the "

" icon next to thier name. You can't edit thier post, but you can see how they did it.

Oh, and again, EKI makes all thier own major componants.

Take care.

John - not to get off topic, but what's the difference between my MUDT and the LUDT? Just size? (I'm assuming the "L" stands for Large). And, where can I find a pic of this Amphibian? Souns kinda cool...
