Hi, I finally got a good pic of my project Cold Steel riflemans hawk. The hammer was removed as well as the extra material on the top of the blade. I removed the paint and left the head as forged finish. The haft was cut to 13 inches (now I wish I would have left it alone) sanded and burned, then finished with several coats of boild linseed oil. A leather wrap with lanyard for a finishing touch.

Thanks for looking

looking good. if i remember right, you cut the hammer poll off with a hacksaw, is that right? how long did it take? was it easy/difficult? i have a CS trailhawk that i did a partial strip of the head (180? grit if i remember right), and left some of the paint finish to give a patina look. replaced stock handle with a Crazy Crow handle that i stained with Minwax "Sedona Red" looks real nice.

i have some copper brads to put in the handle and was going to put some brass tacks too, but recently found Crazy Crow sells "antiqued" brass tacks, probably order those instead.

nice job on your hawk, inspiring...

interesting, the lines near the edge show differntial hardening or is that an effect of the photograph? Nice work

I think the head is only heat treated at the blade. The hammer poll was easy to cut off, I used the band saw at work but that part of the head is soft.

Did that take a good portion of weight off? I have been wanting to lighten mine a bit. I like it but I wish it was a tad lighter. Maybe this is the way to go for me.
