Hello,

I'm a newbie. I've just got my first Tramontina machete. I want to hollow grind the machete but i'm afraid if it requires re- heat treatment it. I assume when re-grind the edge on a wheel belt grinder it will produce sparks which indicating an overheating on the edge. The overheating edge may demage the tamper so it has to be re-heat treat. Is my assumption correct?

Rule of thumb: If it gets too hot for your fingers, it is too hot for the steel.

Not 100% metalurgically accurate, but it's a pretty good and cheap gauge.

I would use water or oil, dipping often to keep edge cool enough to touch. If you get a color change in the edge, you're out of business, IMO. Edge will likely be soft. Sparks don't indicate heat; they indicate the presence of carbon in the steel.

I don't really see any way a machete that thin could be properly hollow ground. What is the goal of hollow grinding it, for looks or for some cutting task?

I'm pretty sure metal bits heated to glowing red indicate heat. If you go slowly and avoid overheating the steel, you can regrind without having to heat treat it again. Dip in water prior to grinding. The purpose of the water is to prevent heat, not cool it after it's heated.

Thanks guys for comments.

@grayzer86: Tram machete is about 3mm thick, isn't it thick enough to be hollow grind? I mean not a deep hollow grind. My purpose is to get the machete to be razor sharp since i will use it to slaughting
