Re-handle an old SOG Pentagon...???

Hi, All:

Hey, I have a SOG Pentagon from the 1990s, and the rubber of the handle is really starting to wear out from regular carry. I wanted to know if anyone knew how the tang was on this knife, and what material is under the overcast rubber.

I am thinking of keeping the shape as it is, but need to know before I take it apart what I will be up against.

Any ideas?

If not, maybe I will just wrap it with sports tape like you find on a hockey stick.

I don't own that particular knife, but here's what I do know (maybe it helps, maybe not)-

The Pentagon appears to have the same handle as the SOG Northwest Ranger. I've seen an x-ray of the NW Ranger and it has a straight stick tang that goes all the way to the end of the handle. The grommet at the end of the handle goes through a hole in the end of the tang.

I use to own a SOG Desert Dagger. The kraton handle was glued onto the tang. I was able to work/pull the handle off without damaging it (after removing the pommel). The glue wasn't super strong.

The handle on the DD is solid kraton, not kraton over plastic.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Pentagon tang and handle are the same as the NW Ranger, that the handle is solid kraton, and that it's glued on.

If you look up the SOG Northwest Ranger on Amazon (the "Prime" listing) and scroll down to the reviews, you might find the x-ray I was talking about. That's where I saw it.

Drilling the grommet out should allow you to pull or cut the handle off. And if the Pentagon tang is the same as the NW Ranger (straight) it should be rather easy to re-handle it or have it done by someone.

Hey, thanks for the info. That may do the trick.

I know the new SOG Pentagons have the solid kraton handle (like my Seal Pup), this old one I have has rubber overmolded over something, must be plastic.

The old SOG knives are so nice; much better than their current offerings especially the Pentagon and Mini pentagon...

A wood or bone handle on your Pentagon would be pretty epic. :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Maybe even stag/deer antler. :thumbup::cool:
