I cut out a 1095 blade and quenched it in a quenchant that I don't now believe was fast enough for 1095. What I want to do is start over on the heat treatment. This is for experimentation and learning more than anything else. I want to use a 9% saline solution to quench the blade. I would like to know what needs to be done to this hardened blade to essentially start over from scratch. Would it be required to completely spheroidal anneal the blade or would it be better to just anneal it. I know the procedure for a spheroidal anneal. What would be the procedure for a "regular" annea in this case? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A note aside: I did successfully harden a small, 1095 paring knife blade last night in the 9% saline solution. I tempered it and it appears to have turned out just fine. I used 90 grams of salt per liter. I did notice, however, that some of the salt remained undissolved. Is a 9% solution right at the saturation point? I heated the solution to about 100 degrees F for the quench. Thank you again for your help. Nicholas Jasper
