Greetings, BF'rs, from the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota! I've had a passing interest in knives from an early age, when my Uncle gave me my first SAK when I was 6 or 7 years old. I'm now 44 and married, with a 2- and 4-year old boy and girl, respectively. I work in health, conducting a wide range of health research studies in collaboration with American Indian tribes in western South Dakota and across the nation. I spend a fair amount of time outdoors, including on tribal reservations. I've always loved hiking and now exposing my kids to it, and I did a fair bit of rockclimbing and mountaineering years ago.
I discovered these fora four years ago and don't think I ever properly introduced myself. I did lurk and read long enough, though, that I acquired a Spyderco Tim Wegner, Sr., Benchmade 690 Elishewitz, and Kersaw Chive 1600SS. I subsequently bought three other Chives to give as presents to family members. The Chive was my EDC for the past two years 99% of the time, until I lost it last week. So, I navigated back to BladeForums and started researching. As a result, I have placed orders in the past 24 hours for a SOG Blink Black Tie, pearl and jet Yin-Yang Spyderco Cricket, titanium/ZDP Kershaw Leek (waiting list), and Fallkniven U2 lockback, and today I bought the Wal-Mart Spyderco Native. I guess I would characterize my current interests as gentleman's folders.
A few words about the Native: sharpest knife I've ever bought! I folded a thin piece of paper and stood it up; the Native cut straight through it with slight downward pressure without deforming the paper! Minimal bit of side-to-side play with excellent lockup. It's a little bigger than I like to carry in the office or clinic, but I'll see tomorrow when it will be my EDC for the first time.
Other knives that have caught my eye include the Al Mar SERE 2000, CRK Small Sebenza and Mnandi, Buck/Mayo TNT, Boker "Leo" damascus folder (from gunship barrel), and Benchmade 440, 710, and Mini Griptilian. Judging by my interests, anything else I should take a close look at? I am not averse to wood, pearl, damascus, or other forms of embellishment.
I have learned a great deal from these outstanding fora, and undoubtedly stand to learn much more, as well as to broaden my interests outside of gentleman's folders. I hope you won't mind my ignorant question or two I may end up asking. Until next time, later.
Jeff
