Re-issued birthcard? What do I need to know about it?

Sometimes CR knives offered at the secondary market do have "re-issued" written at the birthcard and usually the date of the birthcard is newer. I assume that CRK would not send a re-issued birthcard out to a CRK owner, just by his request. So I guess the knife has to be at CRK to receive a new birthcard? Does that mean if I consider buying a knife with a re-issued birthcard, that such knife has been refurbished by CRK? Or not necessarely? Maybe the birthcard was simply lost and the owner wanted a new one?

Personally I would prefer if CRK would put both dates on the birthcard: the real birthdate and the date of re-issuing the birthcard. But maybe that is too complicated for them.

Best,
Stefan

They don't put the original date on the card because they don't know it. They have no way to track, since knives aren't serial numbered. What you do know is that the knife is real, has been to the mothership but may or may not have had anything done to it, and the configuration of the knife at the time it visited CRK. That includes bladesteel, fancy lanyard, double lug on something that doesn't automatically have that, etc.

^^^^ Xactly

Original Birthcard was more than likely lost and the owner requested it while it was at CRK, usually to confirm authenticity for the secondary market.

CRK will only reissue a card to knives that come through the mothership.

I personally have an experience with this as I have sent a couple of Regulars to CRK for Spa treatment and requested for re-issued birthcards. They just have no way of knowing the original manufactured date of a certain piece, so they will just put the date they did the spa service or whatever service you requested (includes and not limited to dual thumb lugs, re-tumbling blade, re-balst / re-polish scales and or warranty work).

As a buyer though, I would rather have a re-issued birthcard and re-issued box than nothing at all. May not be the originals, but it somehow completes the buying experience. :D

I emailed CRK about a re-issued birth card for a Small 21 I recently purchased. Here was their reply:

Hello,

I hope you are enjoying your Sebenza. We are able to provide a re-issued birth card for your knife. Please note that the card will say "re-issue" on it. The knife will have to come into the shop to receive this. There is no charge for the card. There will be a return shipping fee of $17.50. If this is the only service you are wanting, the turnaround time will be about 10 business days. If you are wanting the full spa treatment the turnaround time will be about 4-8 weeks.

The spa treatment includes a clean, tune, sharpen and re-sandblasting of the handles and pocket clip (as long as they are plain titanium or Micarta, and have not been modified). If you do not want some of all of these services, please be sure to list them on the service form, otherwise they will be provided automatically. You can also add additional services like re-tumbling the blade for $30.00 or replacing parts as needed.

I have attached the information and form for sending your knife to us. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Have a great day.

Thank you,

Thanks again for all your valuable information. Appreciate that. Regarding buying a CRK with a re-issued birthcard I am with ice_man: Better than nothing. But less good than original birthcard.
