Re-released Howard Viele question

I just purchased the new Viele (VG-10 with plain edge) and am very pleased with the quality and design of the knife. I think Spyderco should receive some kind of award for their efforts on this model. It has easily replaced my former favorite carry knife.

My question is were these re-released Viele's numbered? (This one is not). The dealer told me they were not but I suspect that he was just guessing. I'm considering purchasing one to use and one for the collection. Can someone in the know comment on this?

My recommendation on this knife?

Hi toothed. Thanx for the kind words on the new improvements. We hope you enjoy the piece.

The new refined Viele's are not numbered. It isn't really a new model or even a variation. It's a refinement or evolution of an existing model. Not different enough to require a number.

Other than the VG-10 steel in the blade, what changes are there? I have an early model plain edge with the AUS-8 steel blade, Although I haven't used this knife for anything heavey duty I have to say it's so sharp it will scare you and the knife is very well constucted and finished like a custom made piece. I guess what I want to know is there enough difference to buy another?

There is also now an arc-ramp on the tang,
a refinement I think all liner locks should
have, and I'm not positive, but I think that
the back/spine of the handle is now 'opened
up', spaced with posts instead of a long
solid spacer. Very pretty piece.

Sal, thank you for the answer about numbering on the improved Viele.

Since I do not own the original model I cannot make any personal comments on the differences with the updated verson. I vaguely remember handling the original knife at the dealer but my overall impression was that I did not like the blade material and the lightness of the knife (not necessarily bad) did not have that feeling of "Spyderco quality."

The improved version feels like a winner the moment you pick it up. Nice size, balance, ergonomics, and looks. IMO it's a gentleman's folder in a useful size--perfect for urban carry. If only it came with a black clip.
