Re-shafting a hawk

Hi all,

I got my polled hawk in the mail yesterday courtesy of Steve F. I've been wanting a hawk for a long time and love the ones that RMJ Forge makes... if I could only afford a $700 hawk...

This one is serviceable, but I'd love to put a nice curly maple or birdseye maple shaft in it and give it the Walosi woodchuck treatment.

I'm guessing that the most common method is sliding in the new shaft down through the top of the eye and seating it via pressure (tapered shaft)... then maybe doing a nice leather wrap around the bottom of the head?

Anybody have a better way? I found a nice birdseye maple shaft on ebay... just need to know how to put it in without messing it up.

Thanks!

Alan

I got this hawk from Ryan back in 2001. Ordered it after watching "The Patriot" and "Last of the Mohicans."

He makes good stuff. Too bad he doesn't do special orders anymore.

Kamagong... Yep. Those two movies got me hooked on them too. I had never considered one as a potential weapon before that. Dang, I had no idea he wasn't taking orders any more :( . I am a huge fan of his work. I'll actually drop in on his site just to drool every now and then. I guess he's too busy with the tactical stuff now to do the custom work. There is a real nice hawk of his over at bladeart that I really like. I guess I'm going to have to get lucky when I finally have enough $$ for one.

Shappa... well dang it. I actually didn't know there was a hawk and axe forum here <slaps palm to forehead> I've got the Cantina bookmarked and rarely go anywhere else in BF except for here and the exchange. I'll go mosey over and take a looksee! Thanks.

BTW... anyone know if $34 is too much for a premium birdseye maple shaft?? I did a search online yesterday and could only turn up a guy on ebay that had any for sale.

Get a wedge or 3, in there as well, {one on longest access 2 on width.} & dry the handle timber to lower humidity than where you will keep it, then it tightens not loosens with age. ;)

Oooo... shiny :)

THANKS for the link. He's got some really nice stuff and for killer prices for hand forged work. I really like that #1 hawk design. Very sweet. I think I found what to spend my 'economic stimulus' money on... I'm gonna help rebuild the economy with a custom hawk :D

Spiral... thanks for the good advice. I'm not sure if I'd be able to get a handle any dryer than here in the winter time though (Wyo gets positively brittle in the winter). I did hear that soaking the head end in linseed oil helps to swell the wood (and won't dry out like water).
