Re-shaping horn handle?

Hey all,

I have a question about my Sirupati. I purchased it a few years back and basically set it up on a display shelf to admire. This weekend I finally got it out and put it through its paces. It performed excellently, but the end of the handle that sits against the heel of my hand is pointed and really tears up my hand. Would it be doable to slowly round off this point with a file? It's a horn handle, so I didn't know how much material there is to work with.

Thanks for any advice!

You can work it with a file no problem at all. I checkered my horn handle and worked it a little bit. File and sand and shape it the way you want it.
You can work the metal together with it. File and then progressively finer sand paper, then a buffing wheel will bring it back to it's original pretty.

Oil it up good as usual.

One thing I will caution, is do so in a well ventilated area or with a bio-filter mask as its possible for materials such as bone, antler, and horn to be breathed in and sit in the lungs(as the body does not recognize it as a foreign substance die to its makeup).

Yes, rounding the corners is ok. Only do enough to make it comfortable for you.
Do it a little at a time and check often. It is far easier to take off than it is to try to put back on.
A little filing and a little sandpaper goes a long way and sometimes works wonders with very little effort.

I dropped my WWII right on the upper pointed part the the pommel and shattered a good sized chunk off. I used my belt sander to bring down the brass buttcap and smooth out the horn. After I ran it under the buffing wheel it looks like it was made that way.

PS the horn was solid all the way to the tang.
