i've had my Bali for only a day, but the blade is already getting dull because the blade sometimes hits the latch when i close it. any tips as to sharpening it without any special machinery? the only thing i have is one of those kitchen knife sharpeners.

First of all .., welcome to the Forums hope you enjoy it!

I guess I'd just pick up a few "Sharpmaker" rods from Spyerco if you are just starting out (a "medium" and a "fine")...check it out here:

Or you might want to see if Josh at "KnifeZilla" has some:

I wouldn't thrash around with a typical "kitchen steel" personally unless (a) it's a "Charming Chinese Cheapie" Balisong.., or (b) you have quite a bit of experience re-edging.

Hope this helps.., and good luck!

Welcome to the forum Baliman.

You are right, don't use the kitchen sharpener, the angle is for thin kitchen knives.

The Sharpmaker is great for maintaining a sharp edge. The trick is not to let it get too dull. If the edge is dinged or chipped, you need a stone to re-bevel the edge. I like the Lansky diamond system for shaping the bevel and the Spyderco Sharpmaker for keeping it sharp. Whatever system you decide on, do a search first as prices vary greatly from dealer to dealer.

hello yall.... you can just ignore this im having trouble validating and just need to do a "test" post

is the sharpening section in "the balisong manual" any good? (i think its written by jeff somebody =oD) or does anyone know where to find a reliable source for sharpening? the only one i know of is the one in the faq on this site. i dont really want to but an electric one, id rather learn to do it freehand.. i have a medium arkansas stone
and i could buy more stones and such... i want to steer clear of electric stuff... the cheap little knife ive been working with, i think i ruined... its weird though... it feels like it has an edge but it doesnt really cut :), but it feels like it would cut me? i saw some one test the sharpness by drawing the blade accros their finger nail and i tried it but it doesnt cut as well as my really sharp new knife.... so...
any help would be really great thanks
and hi! again. =o)

If it is anything like the cheap little knife I started with, don't be surprised if it simply won't get sharp. The steel is pretty bad on the $5-$10 knives.
I have "The Balisong Manual", by Jeff Imada. The sharpening section is not bad if you just want to put a decent edge on it, but I would read some of the online FAQs if you have higher standards.

Try these.

Baliman, Raneflow, welcome to the forums. The links mutant gave are great places to start. I've used regular benchhones, Lansky kits, and currently I use a Sharpmaker/Lansky combo they all work well. I'm going to experiment with Razor edges sytem before the month is over to see how well those work as well. Just follow mutant's links to a life of sharpening Nirvana. Oh yeah and have fun.
