Hello everyone,

I just started to make knives and have 1/2 of one under my belt (or on. I am using 1095 and I am wondering if I can re-heat treat. I heated it up and quelched then baked. I have a feeling I did'nt take it to the demagnetized temp, because I was worried about getting the handle hot. Can I just heat it again, quelch and then bake without ruining the steel?

thanks for the help

Joes, by handle do you mean the tang or do you actually mean the "handle"?? Did you put the handle onto the blade before heat treat? If you did I'd suggest removing it before reheat treating the blade. Sorry if I read your post wrong!

I ment tang, as you can see I am very new at this. Thank you for the help. The handle material is getting ready. This is a great hobby for me and I am learning a lot from the experts like you all.

joes,
Get one of those telescoping magnets. Looks like a retractable pen and is very valuable to the heat treat process for straight Carbon steel. I found one at Harbor Freight for less than $2.00. They also have one that has a flexible handle about 20" long IIRC. It's also dirt cheap. I'll be picking one of those up next time I'm at HF.
Good luck with your project!

All the best,
Mike U.
