after what happened last night i found the first aide skills from my Boy Scout past still work.

my mother in law called that she had fallen. i'm just glad there was a phone in reach from where she was. when we got there she was laying on the floor with a broken ankle. it was a compound break.

Today, her spirits are good at this time but with her in her 70's this will take some time to heel.

with stabilizing the foot, checking for bleeding and checking /making sure that shock was not setting in before the 911 crew showed up( that took 20 to 25 minutes) made think about that training from the past just kicked in when you really need it.

thinking of the events that happened and how this is as important as the other skills we all like to keep in practice.

so i want to update, read and practice first aide skills as i do with gear and fire starting.

so do you know of any good books?
Thanks

BTW Bulgron, I didn't cut the leg off to save to the foot this time. :D
Or it that the other way around. Gees, I always get those mixed up. :D

for real that Charge came in handy to get through her locked screen door that nobody outside the house had a key for.
also i was the only one there with any tools on.

Thanks again for the Leatherman tip.

I would reccomend looking for a an american redcross first aid class, or if your really serious take a state emtb course I took one and it has come in extremely handy on numerous occassions, is now a big part of my career, and a great way to serve your community. the best multi tool is the mind, Nice job with the fracture and good luck in your search.

thanks for the reply.
a course may be the route to take.

with the interest i have in this subject, my wife thinks this is the direction i should look.

as a side note an emt textbook (at least some chapters) is chock full of good information in regards to basic prehospital care.

The best all round small portable book for lamen I have ever seen is:

A Comprehensive Guide to Wilderness and Travel Medicine - 3rd Edition
By Dr Eric Weiss

The first 2 editions are good too, the 3rd has new updates.

Fits in the palm of your hand.
